Provide a description of events (if you know what happened) telling us as much about the incident as possible - some things that may seem trivial to you may be important, so don't leave anything out. Please do not post personal details for obvious reasons - I have recieved a NIP for a date I wasnt in the area for, I was at home. I was driving on the road teh day before because I paid teh congestion charge in london but not on the date on teh NIP

NIP Wizard Responses
These were the responses used by the Wizard to arrive at its recommendation:
Have you received a NIP? - Yes
Are you the Registered Keeper of the vehicle concerned (is your name and address on the V5/V5C)? - No
Is the NIP addressed to you personally? - No

NIP Wizard Recommendation
Based on these responses the Wizard suggested that this course of action should be considered:
  • Do nothing!

The police are not requesting the information from you, they are requesting it from the person the NIP is addressed to.
Wait until you receive a NIP addressed to you personally, then come back here.

The wizard has said not to do anything but its a company name and Im the director. but the dates wrong.
Others will be along soon to provide a more experienced answer and the steps to take, but first of all don't try to second-guess the intentions of the NIP - you've no idea if the date's "wrong", all you can do is answer to the information put in front of you and certainly don't volunteer more than was asked for in your response ("I was there the day before though, officer...")

For all you know, somebody could have cloned your plate and happened to drive through the day before!

However peeps recommend you end up responding, wait until close to the deadline so even if they do realise their mistake, they can't issue a correction (but don't be late!)
I assume from your account that nobody else had it.

Wait until at least 14 days after the alleged offence before responding. This will prevent them correcting it.

Write "See attached" on the form and staple a letter to it stating that you were the only possible driver and the van was not at the location at the date/time. Say where it was. Don't contact them in advance to request any photos because that sends a message that it just might have been there.

Keep copies of the form and letter. Return them by recorded delivery. Usually I advise simple First Class with proof of posting but in this case you want to make sure they get your reply.

The NIP Wizard is misleading. Even if the van wasn't there, your company must reply or you can expect a fine in £1000 territory.

Do not tell them that the van was there the day before. It's not your responsibility to second guess what they might have meant or correct their mistakes.
