I received a PCN for parking in a residents' bay when I parked my car outside the Elizabeth Avbenue surgery on a Tuesday evening. I did have an appointment with the doctor although I know that this is not a relevant defence. Unknown to me there was an Arsenal match being played at the Emirates Stadium. I now know there is one sign on the route I took which shows the dates of matches but as it was a dark, wet evening and the sign is not very prominent, I did not see this. I thought I could park in the street because it was 7.00 pm. You may have guessed, I am not a football fan and didn't realise games are played on Tuesdays.

I challenged the notice as soon as I arrived home- not holding out any hope of being successful and now I have received a letter requesting payment.

I am very angry about the way Islington uses PCNs for money-making. I use my car infrequently and this is the third time I have had a PCN in three years. It's not as if the scheme has reduced traffic and pollution.

I live in Hackney and I am minded to avoid Islington completely for shopping and socialising if the councillors think it is acceptable to treat people in such a draconian way. There appears to be no use of discretion on the part of the officers administering this scheme, thye just continue to pull in the money. On one occasion, I returned to my car 3 minutes late because the guy in front of me at the supermarket was faffing around - and this cost me £60. Can anyone help please? Thanks.

Check the parking bay. I was ticketed for parking on a match day, around the corner from Arsenal. The parking bays were painted incorrectly, and I refused to pay. They gave in, but wouldn't admit their bays were unlawful.

If you can return to the scene, and if you can get some pics of where you were parked, showing in clear detail the end markings of that bay, at both ends, what was written along the outside of the bay, and pics of the sign on a pole which should be near to this bay.

This is important as if as the op says the parking bays are, wonky this is a way out of the ticket.

Michael Gibson - too late to type badly tonight but may have a go tomorrow. What are you looking for? I can check against regulations if that is what you want to do.

I will also check the road markings and signs. Thanks for these suggestions.
