On Friday 29th May at 09:35, I drove my car with my mother as my passenger, to her home. First journey since restrictions lifted.
I was pulled over by traffic police who told me I had no insurance and later seized my car. It appeared the temporary insurance had expired during lockdown, and my loaned vehicle was not covered! I will add that my cover for insurance policy was paid and expired on the 1/9/20.
The Police officer asked me if it was my car and I said no as it was a car I had borrowed from a friend.
Here are some points to give my post some context;
I have been driving for 22 years and have a clean DL, I have always been insured, paying for insurance annually and have had back to back insurance for 22 years, I will add this is the first time in 22 years I have been pulled over by Police, and I was very scared (I am a law abiding citizen and have never been in trouble with Police)
I have paid my premium for the whole year and my insurance expires on 1/9/20.
My insurance was originally taken out on an A3 part'exed for a Q5 in Feb (which had to be returned due to a transmission fault/vehicle did not reverse!)
Insurance suspended for 2 weeks until car was loaned by my partners friend, Vauxhall Astra 55 plate. (Used for 2 weeks for school run and shopping errands)
I told my Insurance co that this is a temporary car and I would only require insurance until further notice.
The Astra was used for 2 weeks when the lockdown restrictions came into place on the 23rd March.
The car has been sat on my driveway since 23rd March (*the car is taxed)
When stopped, I was told to get out of the car and hand over the keys immediately (Car later impounded)
I asked why I was stopped and was told I had no insurance
It appeared the Insurance was only for a month!
But bearing in mind, I had paid my premium for the whole year, I was really confused and upset that I had broken the law, and now I am facing a £300 fine and 6 points on my clean licence. I am beyond upset and I desperately need advice as to what will happen to me and my clean driving history.
I drove the car with the understanding it was insured and I had paid my Insurance premium for the year.
Insurance company has insisted I requested Insurance for a month. Insurance exp on the 11th April during lockdown. During this time I have been looking for a suitable car, but as dealerships have been closed it has been impossible to purchase a new car given the previous restrictions.
Insurance company did not notify me that the insurance had expired/due to expire (previous companies have notified me Insurance is due to expire) Yet they have not offered a premium refund from Q5 to Astra, surely they should write to me/refund as the insurance groups are so different.
Please help as I am going out of my mind with worry.
Help and advice greatly appreciated.
