What difference, if any, is there between a bus lane and a bus gate in respect of signs and road markings?

Is it a bus lane where there is a parallel and adjacent running lane for other traffic and a bus gate where no other traffic uses the same length of road?

This is in relation to an anticipated penalty by a relative who will be abroad for the next three weeks. First time in the town and lost among the one way system she came across this

This is the location

There is only one 'bus only' sign which was obscured by a stationary bus as she passed it. The only road marking is half a circle with 'only' badly deteriorated and the word 'bus' has been tarmacked over. This sign was in the same condition on GSV March 2017. There are extensive roadworks down the centre of the road with the contractor's barrier rails needing careful attention.

There are no advance warning signs nor a turn left sign for prohibited traffic.

Any comments would be appreciated.

that is the correct sign for a bus gate, only one is required by TSRGD 2016 though to comply with LATOR 1996 then I would venture two would be needed due to the width of the road. As it is the sign could relate to the access road of to the left.

The road markings are mandatory so those being worn or missing is also a ground for challenge

I would take them all the way on this one. Only one sign that was obscured by a bus, virtually worn-out carriageway markings, and two lanes of carriageway. The GSV says it all, really. Of course the venal and rapacious council (but might be TfL),will not accept this, so you'd need to take them to London Tribunals and risk the full PCN penalty.

Seeing as there are zero cases of tickets received on here, it is a safe bet the camera sign is for deterrent effect only.

It's not London.

Can't see a camera at the start of the bus lane on GSV.

The bus lane ends at a well-defined bus gate which is covered by a camera that, depending on the alignment, may also detect prohibited vehicles at the end of the bus lane.

IMO before the start of the bus lane there should be a sign indicating the road to the left is the route for prohibited traffic combined with a bus only with a bar. There should be lane markings to direct traffic into this road. This 'diversion' route then requires a U turn at the end to return up the one-way carriageway on other side of the bus lane.

A weird and confusing hotchpot of a junction

Even the bridge doesn't have any height signs!

If a PCN materialises, I would fight it all the way on signage, not to mention the probable PCN/NOR co*k ups

IF any happens I would argue it on signs as well.
Council may argue that one sign is adequate but just a little bit before

Two very clear signs on a narrower road.
Not too mention forcing all traffic from that junction into a right turn and straight at the bus gate with no pre warning signs
No road legend
No obvious escape route.
Its a pigs ear

Thanks to all.

She's away for three weeks from tomorrow and the 14 day reduced penalty offer will be foregone if the PCN is issued quickly so she will go all the way if full price is on the cards.

Update:

My relative has returned from holiday and 28 days have now elapsed since the incident with no PCN has been issued. Her V5C has correct address and details.
