Provide a description of events (if you know what happened) telling us as much about the incident as possible - some things that may seem trivial to you may be important, so don't leave anything out. Please do not post personal details for obvious reasons -

NIP Wizard Responses
These were the responses used by the Wizard to arrive at its recommendation:
Have you received a NIP? - Yes
Are you the Registered Keeper of the vehicle concerned (is your name and address on the V5/V5C)? - No
Is the NIP addressed to you personally? - No

NIP Wizard Recommendation
Based on these responses the Wizard suggested that this course of action should be considered:
  • Do nothing!

The police are not requesting the information from you, they are requesting it from the person the NIP is addressed to.
Wait until you receive a NIP addressed to you personally, then come back here.

Try again using the "additional questions" option - they are needed to help! Could we have the full story too if it's not addressed to you - what's happened??

My apologies - I was trying to use the Wizard to get an idea of what to expect and truly made a mess of it, culminating in the creation of a forum topic!

To summarise:
Driving wife's car along A303, saw camera van and knew I'd been caught in excess of 70mph.
Wife received NIP 13 days later. Went online and nominated myself as the driver the same day.
Some time passes, nothing further heard. Opted not to contact them to point this out.

6 weeks pass, then I receive a chasing letter (branded NIP reminder/similar) giving me 7 days to respond of which 4 had already passed by date of receipt.
Contacted the SEU and politely pointed out the lack of NIP, so regardless of their reminder I was unable to respond at this point.
New NIP sent to me, to which I completed the reply form and returned 48 hours later.

I'm happy to hold my hands up and take the course which has been offered, although having been online to the PAS I see that the most recent NIP has been processed as a nomination of another person again. I assume this has been done to reset the timescale in which I had to reply, so no major concerns.

Was an ‘online’ nomination offered?

Normally the recipient would name the driver, sign the form and return in the post.

Not heard of nominating online before. So this was a web page where you log in using a reference on the original NIP?

Currently, just a few forces with a PAS (public access system) have the extra option to permit on-line nomination rather than sending the 172 form back.
There is no admission option however.

Interesting. How do they get a signature?

I've assumed it's been coming. When I've applied for a credit card or filled out solicitor forms all the signatures have been electronic.

I have a feeling being the public sector the signature method will be both bespoke and complicated.

If it’s a reply nominating another person then no signature is necessary - the maker will not be the defendant and thus the provisions of s 12 of the Road Traffic Offenders Act 1988 don’t apply.

I assumed it would be for both. It would be somewhat counterintuitive to design an online system to do half of a job.

Not beyond belief of course.

That is how I read the above. Nomination but not admission.

It would be possible for the system to deal with an electronic admission, but as southpaw has already pointed out, it would not currently be legal.
