Hey all

Does anyone know if the numerous cameras on motorways (speed / traffic / others) can catch you on your phone, so you'll get a letter through from the police stating phone usage at a later date or do you have to be spotted by the police and pulled over?

if not it surely can't be long before this comes into affect

This genuinely wasn't anything to do with me but i was stuck in traffic today on the M1 and we were at crawling pace and i mist have seen at least 10 people all chatting away on the phones, seems no one cares about the new rules lol.

thanks for any info

Most motorway camera setups capture from the rear, so very unlikely to detect mobile phone/set belt offences.

Would love to know what you think the camera will use to detect mobile phone use by the driver or failing to wear a seatbelt, radar isn't going to cut it after all!

Presumably he means the Highways England CCTV ones but AFAIK they are not high enough resolution to read numberplates.

Best way if you want the mobile phone law enforced is to decriminalise it and let the councils get their mitts on it, even without the points they will lap it up at £200 a pop. Plus it would free up the Marmite-like spread of police we have to deal with the drivers who struggle to drive even when not on the phone.

You could just let the Police force itself to keep the money then it would be self financing

You can't blame the drivers for their poor driving - it's all down to inadequate signage or damned VSLs!
