I drive this stretch of motorway all the time, and am curious about how its supposed to work.

Judging by the speed people go past when there is no aspect showing on the gantries, the cameras don't work unless a variable limit is displayed.

Frequently, ill be driving along, through blank gantries, when suddenly one will be showing 60, so I slow down, plenty seem to keep going at much more than 60. The next gantry will be off, and the next and ill never see the NSL sign shown. Are blank gantries supposed to mean its back to nsl? I always thought they had to show the NSL sign.

I know the cameras work because this week, i counted eight flashes on the opposite side as I passed by from a single camera, signs showing 50mph

I don't want to speed, and certainly try not to, but I feel I'm causing a hazard slowing to 60 or 50.

and I have lost count of the number of times the incident signs have been on, limit reduced for several miles, to revert to NSL, with nothing there, but after the NSL, a stranded car in lane 1. I did think its teething problems, but its been working for a long time now

anyone got any comments on it?

When no lower speed is shown then NSL will apply. 79mph and above can be enforced.

In theory the previous displayed limit would still be in force and NSL should be displayed to revert the limit back. In practice if successive gantries are blank then you can assume NSL is back in force.

Indeed, it can be quite disconcerting but just slow carefully and let others make silly manoeuvres.

thanks for replying smile.gif

I still think all aspects should show NSL if there isnt a lower limit in force. Sometimes NSL will be shown on several successive gantries for some reason too

I believe there's a short grace period between a gantry illuminating a lower speed limit and it becoming enforced by the cameras. Aside from that, I just slow gradually to the limit by coasting in gear then pootle along in lane 1 until the zone is cleared, let all the nutters do 90 past me. If they want to drive dangerously so be it.
