Hi everyone,

I just want a little bit of advice really if possible.

This morning after i'd dropped my children off at school, i was attending a hospital appointment. On the way i encountered a pedestrian crossing with a crossing guard (lollipop person?) which was on red. I pulled up as she allowed everyone to cross. After everyone had crossed, she returned to the side of the road. I didn't have a clear view of the lights as i'd stopped pretty close to the crossing and there was sun glare. I noticed that a car on the other side of the crossing set off, and i thought the lights had gone green, so i set off too. I looked in the rear view mirror and noticed that they were still on red. I couldn't really do much about it at that point, so i carried on going on my journey.

This isn't something i'd normally do at all, as i'm usually very alert at crossings where pedestrians are involved and i'm always alert and aware of traffic lights/speed limit. I've 0 points on my license and never been in trouble with the Police at all. The only incident i've had since learning to drive 18 months ago is wrongly going down a No Entry except Buses road, which i heard nothing from in the end. What am i likely to hear from this? There was no Red Light Camera, and there was no Police around from what i could see. The crossing guard was on the side of the road, there was no pedestrians about as i'd checked before i set off. If the other car hadn't have gone, i wouldn't have either. I wasn't in a rush, or eager to get to the hospital as i had a lot of time to spare. It was just an honest, genuine mistake and I've been beating myself up over it all day and feeling very guilty as i'd never normally do something like this and in all honesty, i'm unlikely to do it again in the future.

So does anyone have any idea what i'm looking at here in terms of punishment besides the guilt and dread i've been feeling?

Thanks,

Paul

This is an offence usually dealt with by a Fixed Penalty Notice of £60 + 3 points, or sometimes the offer of a course. In the circumstances you describe it is very unlikely you will hear any more. If you are the registered owner of the vehicle you were in, you have only 14 days to wait, the time limit for a NIP (unless you have recently changed the vehicle or your address)

Zilch. Without a RLC or a police officer why would you think anything will happen?

I didn't know if a member of public could report me or the Crossing Guard, other drives etc

I'm only going on the assumption of there being no Police around due to the fact that i wasn't pulled over or anything like that. To be fair, i've been feeling absolutely dreadful about it all day. Along the lines of What if a Child had ran out, or someone had just started to cross, it could have been a nasty situation. I still feel rather sick about the whole incident at the moment.

My dad is the RK of the car, i used to be a named driver on it, but he got banned so i'm now the main driver. The insurance wouldn't let me take out a new policy half way through this one. I'm sure he'll tell me should anything come through the post.

Thanks for all your replies,

Paul

Theoretically you could be reported by a member of the public, but it's unlikely. How many times have you seen someone go through a red light, and how many of those times did you call the police? 99% of people just tut and shake their heads. It's doubtful whether the police would be inclined to act on a report from a single MoP in any event. Don't beat yourself up - no harm was actually done. Just try to be more careful in future.

Yeah i can understand that Aretnap, i've actually seen people go through red lights at speed (poss 40, 45 in a 30) and just shook my head and thought "whats the point". I think the reason i'm pretty shook up about it is that it was totally out of character for me, and knowing that at that time there is children possibly late for school, and having children of my own, i know exactly how unpredictible they are at crossings!

I'm also guessing if there was police that witnessed it, they'd most probably have pulled me at the time and gave me a roadside FPN?

Correct, unless otherwise engaged in which case they would probably not bother with you anyway.

Thank you all for the replies.

My mind is somewhat at rest now, so i'm just going to put it behind me and and be a lot more careful when i can't see the lights at a crossing properly.
You've all been a great help

On the other hand you have actually committed an offence by your own admission. I doesn't matter whether or not you were caught or reported.
You might consider going to the nearest PS and turning yourself in. This is the only way that you will get to live with your conscience.

Ignore the troll, cannot see him lasting long on here.

I think further action is unlikely, but you need to be aware that crossing patrols (lolipop persons rolleyes.gif ) are quite pro active in reporting these types of incidents and some have video cameras in their...err.. lolipops.

I know about the ones who have camera's and the sorts, but i'm pretty certain the ones around here have no camera's in their sticks. They're just the normal bog standard sticks.
I was thinking perhaps the crossing guard might have reported the incident, but seeing as there was another car who crossed the crossing before me, chances are they might have been concentrating on them? To be fair, when i looked in my rear view mirror and saw the lights were still red, she didn't really look too bothered from what i could see and wasn't writing anything down.

I've definitely become more aware at crossings now and wait until i can see all cars moving forward if i can't see the lights properly. It was just an honest mistake which i've definitely learnt from.

Ive seen crossing patrol staff noting numbers before, but its always been at pelican crossing where cars havnt stopped upon their instruction, which is clearly unsafe. As long as the patrol was off the road at the time, cant imagine for a second she would have reported you. If she had then it would just be a letter telling you to be careful in the future (akin to what people get when been caught at 31mph in a 30mph zone by community speed watch).
