Hi Everyone,
If you attend a magistrates court and receive a short ban for speeding, do they physically take your photocard licence, stopping you from using it as valid photo ID or driving in other countries around the world? Many thanks |

No body on this forum would suggest that if you are banned that you drive a car away from the court or drive in another country until the ban has passed and your licence re-instated. Pete D

Why ever not?
If you are banned in this country, that is where your ban applies. Nothing at all to prevent you driving in the rest of the world. |

Only if you have a valid licence in that country. I had a member of staff that was banned and he could not hire a car in another country (Europe ) so I had to repatriate him. A ban is 'no valid licence' Pete D

Correct a ban in your home country means your licence is no longer valid anywhere else (obvioulsy for say a French licence holder, a ban in the UK is only effective in the UK), thats why most of the top motorsport guys have 2 EU licences, get banned and you can still drive on the other one elsewhere - Colin McRea's second licence was Swedish from memory!

Can a UK citizen "upgrade" to an EU licence?
If so, what would stop a UK citizen driving whilst abroad, using their EU licence? It all seems administratively a grey area. Poles and Czechs drive here by using their EU licence. They are entitled to apply for a UK licence without taking any test as their EU licence is valid throughout the EEC / EU area. They are not obliged to do this, being EU citizens. I have looked at the Directgov.gov.uk site and it only says that the upgrade for UK citizens is "planned". |

You have to genuinely, 'live' in the country you are applying in for 90 days or is it 180 I forget and if you have a banned licence then you have to take their test. Pete D

An 'EU' licence is a licence issued by an EU country, we all have 'EU' licences, the EU itself does not issue licences AFAIK. Under EU law a licence issued and valid in any EU country is legal in the whole EU.
