Hello all
3 weeks ago I took a trip to a place I had not been to before. I was caught speeding on the way there and on the way back by the same camera - 41 and 36 in a 30 - within an hour. West Yorkshire I returned the notices together asking for it to be seen as one journey. Today I received two conditional offers of fixed penalty (£100 plus 3 points each) Is there any point continuing to argue the one journey issue Also I really do want to alter my speed awareness. The controls on the car have now been set to audible if I go over the speed limit but it doesn't always pick up the limits. I have ordered a gadget that should do the same but with more consistency. Of course my own eyes and personal awareness are the key.... but I am am genuinely trying to keep my awareness heightened to change my behaviour so any further recommendations would be much appreciated Thanks in advance! |

Have you attended a speed awareness course in the past 3 years?

Also I really do want to alter my speed awareness. As hinted already, one of those should qualify for a course to avoid the points (if you haven't done one within the last 3 years). The controls on the car have now been set to audible if I go over the speed limit but it doesn't always pick up the limits. I have ordered a gadget that should do the same but with more consistency. Of course my own eyes and personal awareness are the key.... but I am am genuinely trying to keep my awareness heightened to change my behaviour so any further recommendations would be much appreciated Is the issue knowing what the limit is or the speed you are doing? I'm guessing they were on a restricted road where there are no speed limit signs? -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

Hi thanks for replies so far. Went on a course about 2 years ago which I am guessing they know anyway as not offered
I am being honest about the speeding awareness. I don't consciously speed at all. I am very cautious about all other aspects - traffic lights, roundabouts, lane control etc. I don't play music much or do calls etc But I know that I am not aware as I should be (mind drifts, thinks about other things) and I am trying to bring my focus back to this point and make speed awareness habitual again - through alarms, and attention grabbing ideas until it sticks Hope that makes sense Thanks |

I have just read about Waze from another post - is this reliable? I stress again its about refocussing my awareness and training myself about how slow speeds really are if you follow me> When I tried the car's speed tracker it didn't seem to pick up the speed limit the majority of the time
Hope this makes sense! |

Garmin is very good, my ex who was on the brink of 12 points was saved by it, but no system is infallible. Can't help with Waze. -------------------- |

Waze is an app, Garmin a stand alone device. Any device will not be accurate all the time, you cannot rely on them solely. My own car gets one limit wrong all the time (parallel roads with different limits) and the courtesy car I'm in right now is very often wrong (but it's a Peugeot so.....).
The biggest error we see is people assuming that restricted roads (those with a system of street lighting every 183m or less apart) is something other than a 30 because 'it doesn't look like it should be', urban dual carriageways for example. Simply put street lights and it's a 30 UNLESS there is signage indicating a different limit. I use Waze and it works quite well, but a) doesn't always give you an audible alert of a camera (very odd and something I meant to contact them about) and b) relies on other users inputting the data correctly (hence I recently got snapped by a static camera when I was told I was in an average speed zone).

Waze is an enabler, otherwise it does nothing. Dare I say, if you obey the speed limits the locations of cameras is irrelevant. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

It never seems to amaze me the number of people who can't seem to relate their actual speed to their perceived perception of speed.
My partner seems to suffer from this, often not seeing speed limit signs, especiall termintion signs and dawdles along on a fast NSL road! The opposite of exceeding the limit. but I digress. |

It's also worth noting that Garmin (in common with most car manufacturers offering integrated satnavs) uses Here Technologies (long ago known as Navteq) to provide it's mapping. Here is mainly owned by a consortium of the big German manufacturers, and also makes available a free app, with speed limits and offline capability - so for myself I reckon I might as well cut out the middleman and go with the same provider that's in most cars anyway. -------------------- Regards,

Answer To A is you only get a audible alert if you are going over the speed limit. Red/speed cameras alert all the time. |
