How accurate are GPS systems? I was basically going down this road today and the police were there with a hand held camera and I was doing roughly 36 MPH, and further back the road was a 30 sign, but on my phone via the Google maps app as you head towards where the speed trap was my GPS reading changed from 30 to 40 zone. Hence why I dont really know if was caught or not.

Yeah but new drivers don't know that who have had to include these devices into their driving experience when they passed their test. Thats my point.

Really? New drivers aren’t being told they have to pay attention to road signs? Rubbish.

OP, a satnav is used on the driving test to give directions, not to indicate speed limits. Your partner will know that.

No she is as confused as me. It was her actually thst questioned why are sat navs part of the driving test, yet they can lead you into a trap at the same time.

They will only lead her into a trap if she relies on them to indicate the speed limits, rather than observing the signs and street lights as she would have been taught in preparing for the test.

The sat nav and driving tests does seem to be a bit weird.

They apply to 80% of tests I understand, so you may not get one.

It is a device supplied by the examiner who has set the route.

You seem to be supposed to follow the route, but are allowed to ask the examiner for clarifications. It is no demerit not to follow it - unless you do something wrong in not following it.

I am at a bit of a loss as to what it is testing.

I fail to see a connection between testing someone’s ability to follow Satnav directions and how that relates to whether or not a device displays a limit to be honest. The test is of the ability to follow the directions.

Knowing how to use a sat nav doesn’t mean not knowing how to drive without one. It also means knowing when to ignore it. And I am absolutely certain that no new driver has been told by their instructor to trust the information on their sat nav over what they can see out the window (whether that’s speed limits or road layouts)

Out of interest, if you’re driving along, following a route on your sat nav and you come to a newly built roundabout that’s not on your sat navs map, do you :

A) treat it as a normal roundabout and pick the most sensible looking exit based on the road signs.
B) drive straight over it because the sat nav says it’s not real.
C) stop the car and sit at the side of the road, sobbing. Have an existential crisis.

Well I learn something new every day. (Although my test was taken over 30 years ago!)

I would guess it tests you can drive competently with a device - that is doesn't unduly distract you. After all, many modern cars now come as standard with Sat Nav or will be using an aftermarket option (most likely an app on a smartphone) so many journeys will be guided by one.

However, as noted the instructions do not override the law, particularly the speed limit signs.

Here's TomTom's take:
Always check the speed limit for the road you are on. The speed limit may have changed and the speed limit shown on your navigation device may no longer be correct. TomTom is not liable for errors in the maps and accepts no responsibility if you are caught breaking the speed limit.

My old satnav used to beep when I was going 60 on a motorway because when the maps were last updated there was a temporary speed limit of 50 in force.

As you correctly said, you do not need a Sat Nav for driving tests - I do not know where OP has got this information from.

The driving invigilator will sometimes use their own Sat Nav and place it in the vehicle for the learner to follow during the test. It is definitely not a requirement to own or bring a Sat Nav to your test.

It kinds lures them into trouble. Rather than just using old fashioned highway code.

As one adjudicator put it, a sat-nav device is just an electronic map. As with any map, there is always a possibility your map could be out of date.

Just for general information on this subject; my car has a built in satnav and a dashboard information dial. They frequently give different speed limit iinformation. The information dial frequently loses the information altogether whilst the satnav does not always pick up local speed limit variations due tosay roadworks. I would also mention that when driving on a local NSL road, the satnav will change to 30mph going up a motorway bridge when the sign for the 30 is not visible until you top the hill!!

So I go with general advice - go with your eyes on the road signs.

D) Distract yourself by using the sat-nav's Update Map facility to send in a map update as you drive over/round the roundabout.
