I'm allowed to drive other vehicles on my insurance policy if they have valid insurance. What I don't know is can I drive another car if it has trade insurance? I cannot ask my insurance company as they are now closed, and I may have to drive another car tomorrow with a traders policy.

Is it for example a courtesy car owned by a garage, and insured under a trade policy issued to them? Or is it a vehicle with no insurance at all, that is covered by a trade policy of, say, a car dealer? You'd need to check the wording of your policy, if you post it up we can check. Generally most policies with this requirement state that the vehicle being driven must have in force its own policy, i.e. a policy issued specifically to that vehicle. Without checking the exact wording of your policy it would be foolish to assume you're covered, because if you're wrong you'd have no defence in law. Therefore unless you check (or let us check) the exact policy terms and conditions, you should assume the trade policy does not count and you wouldn't be covered. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

What he said.
If in doubt you can get temporary insurance online, buy it by the hour. |

Is the vehicle listed under the trade policy? Usually trade insurance covers 'any vehicle in the custody or control' of the policy holder. If however it is not specified on that policy then without the policy holder being present how would you prove it is insured? If it is specified it should show up on AskMid.

Sorry for the late reply. I decided not to drive the car as I wasn't sure and there is nothing in the wording of my policy that makes it any clearer.
The car does show up on MID but it's covered under a friend's trade policy as he's a car dealer. |

Presumably the car would only be covered by the trade policy if you were using it for your friend's trade purposes. |

For future reference, you can get a 24 hour policy for something like £12.50 -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

That's not quite the point, he knows his friends policy doesn't cover his use of the vehicle, what was in doubt was whether the trade policy satisfied the conditions for driving other vehicles on his own policy. |
