Maybe a blanket ban might be unreasonable but it would help many I know to get to the shops without having to enter the road with all the dangers that poses.

I agree with the principle and sorting out the inconsistency but councils might have to create a lot of pavement parking bays in a hurry

Otherwise the Law of Unintended Consequences will ensure chaos - choked narrow roads and the loss of half the street parking because it will only be allowed on one side

If everyone parked (legally) off the pavement on both sides of the street on just one day, it would prove how unworkable this would be. The buses, utility companies and emergency services would soon be up in arms about how difficult it is to navigate the streets.

Isn’t obstruction of the highway an offence so that wouldn’t be allowed?
And not everyone would do it - Catch 22 anyone?
Disabled folk round here regularly have to travel along the road to avoid inconsiderate parking.

I've seen this happen on a small scale before. The number of parking places was reduced due to roadworks so people parked on the footpath - so they got tickets. Where, exactly, are all those vehicles meant to go? They can't just disappear into thin air!

Maybe the arguments for less cars on the road are becoming stronger what with pollution levels, crap drivers and road rage. And less places to park as you say Southpaw.
Seriously considered it myself living on a busy bus route and with good local rail connections.
A bonus could be renting what there is of my drive / hard standing to commuters.

Pavement parking has been illegal since 1835, this will just make it practical to enforce.
