For the second time, an idiot driver taking his kid to school has attempted to overtake me on the wrong side of a keep left island (a long stretch of two islands) while I've been taking my kids to school. This is a busy cycle and pedestrian island and this lunatic could kill someone not expecting a car on the wrong side of the road.
https://www.google.com/maps/@51.541416,-0.0...3312!8i6656 This time, I got out of the car and had a word with him when we stopped at the lights ahead. I said I'd report him if he did it again. he said nothing. But is this worth reporting and are police likely to do anything? This post has been edited by stamfordman: Thu, 14 Mar 2019 - 09:26 |

I can't see a simple your-word-against-his complaint going anywhere. Some forces accept dashcam footage and will pursue particularly egregious offences, whether the Met do I have no idea.

Reporting him would cause you less trouble than punching him in the mouth, but as Fredd says without evidence??? Its not normally something I would get hett up about but it does look to be a particularly dangerous place for such stupidity
But its in London so we might see him asking for help in fighting his PCN's because he had to pass the wrong side of the sign because of miss daisy tootling along and blocking the road -------------------- All advice is given freely. It is given without guarantee and responsibility for its use rests with the user

By "attempted to overtake" I assume you mean he passed to the right of the bollards, failed to gain enough advantage so slippend in behind you again at the end of the seperated bit.
A spectacularly moronic piece of driving if so. Pesonally I would lose the will to live waiting for 101. Hopefully the word you had will have the desired effect. |

Yes that's right - both times I saw what he was doing and decided not to let him. Was in our other car the morning which is maybe why he tried it again - however, it's a turbo charged Volvo that does 0-60 in about 6 secs so he wasn't going to win in his old Corsa. I should add that there's a 20 mph limit in the whole of Hackney. What concerns me is people like this driving illegally and dangerously especially at times when there are a lot of kids and cyclists on the streets and it's one reason I don't let my kids cycle on the roads to school. "Decided not to let him" (by accelerating presumably above 20mph) is perhaps not in your favour. ;-)
In those circumstances I would not be reporting due to potential comeback on me. I can hear the "away team" saying:- "well there I was driving along and I started to pass this old duffer doing 10mph. He accelerated to stop me completing my manouvere and whilst it may have been poor judgement the only thing I could see to do was go the wrong side of the bollards". It is obviously very unlikely to BiB wil be interested due to lack of independant evidence but I wouldn't risk it. |

Yes I know - but there's no excuse for what he's doing - possibly every morning for all i know and also in other places. If someone doesn't intervene he could hit someone. The point is the threshold at which someone is worth reporting.

Blocking an overtake to teach someone a lesson is worse than a poor overtake in my book.

The point is the threshold at which someone is worth reporting. Set up a dashcam, get firm evidence, report it. Whether does any good or not, dunno. I see many examples of poor driving every day. See many examples of aggressive driving. Most I simply shrug about, no point in getting het up about them. This sort of thing is beyond poor or simply aggressive. I've caught a couple of spectacularly poor driving incidents on my helmet cam in London and used the Met Police online road traffic incident report page. Both times I've had confirmation that they were taking action.
Worryingly, both involved "professional" drivers. One a black cab and the other a licenced minicab. |

……….. the other a licenced minicab. Jeez Colin Some of the worst drivers I see are minicabs..... Stop where they like, often 3ft out from kerb. Often on wrong side of road and with headlamps blazing On zigzags. Some spectacular U Turns or totally ignoring normal signs or conventions. Local firm to us, the access to their base is on a dual carriageway section of a main road by lights. Often see them turning right when they leave the base, crossing 3 lanes of traffic, the central reservation and joining the two lanes in the other direction. Or simply travelling 30 yards on the wrong side of the road (into three lanes of traffic) till the start of the reservation then changing lanes to the right one. The more "law abiding" do turn left, then pull a U turn in the junction at the lights. Or carry on across the lights till the end of the central reservation and then U Turn, ignoring the No U Turn sign there. |

If it was a one off kind of deal then I would have said just leave it, but as he is doing this on a repeated basis, he poses a safety concern to the users of the crossing and other drivers.
A dashcam would be the best evidence of him doing this, if you don't have one, put your phone in a holder in a horizontal position, and when your on the stretch of road tap record on, ONLY USE IT IN A HOLDER IF USING A PHONE! and submit using the force area's dashcam submission page or send it in email. Speeding up to block only serves to make you look just as bad if not as bad as the overtaking vehicle, let them do it. Stay on the right side of the law, squeaky clean. Perhaps also a word with local councillor and council and neighbourhood policing team on perhaps monitoring this section, and do a traffic management survey with a view to putting a zebra crossing there? Perhaps also a word with local councillor and council and neighbourhood policing team on perhaps monitoring this section, and do a traffic management survey with a view to putting a zebra crossing there? No guarantee a proper crossing will help. I was almost hit a few months ago (emergency stop, stopped about two metres away) crossing on a red light at a pelican crossing. I think the driver was focused on overtaking the bus stopped just past the crossing and wasn't paying attention to the crossing itself. The standard of driving around here is so poor that obviously stupid places to overtake (double white lines, blind bends, approaching busy junctions, even to turn right at a junction up ahead) seems fair game. I can't remember the last time I saw someone stopped by an unmarked car, and even marked cars are rare. Trafpol down, **** drivers up. |
