So, yesterday I received two speeding tickets through the post one for doing 36 mph in a 30 zone on 05/02/19, the other for doing 38mph in a 30 zone on 06/02/19. Today I received another for doing 40mph in a 30 zone on 07/02/2019. It's on the same road and same time each day as it's on my commute to work, my place of employment for over a year. I imagine more will follow
I fully appreciate that I have broken the law and whilst I realise it's no excuse but Im travelling at the speed other cars on the road areally doing. It occurs just after I come off a slip road from a dual carriageway way where cars are all travelling at 80+mph on the outside lane and 65+mph on the inside lane. I've only ever had one speeding ticket in my 21year driving history and that was in 2012. However I already have 3 points I think from when I first started working in the area for going over the line on a red light....having realised I was in the wrong lane and then realising the lights had changed for the lane I was in and immediately stopping but going over the line. I feel sick with worry that I will lose my driving licence. I need to drive for my job. Its hard to believe I've gone from having no points to at least 12 points in less than a year when I've only ever had 3 points on my licence, once. I realise I will probably have to go to court to beg for my licence but if I get another ticket tomorrow for another speeding offence I'm done for. What can I do to mitigate the potential consequences. If I lose my licence, I lose my job (sociao worker) and my home. Anyone have any suggestions as to what to do now? Thanks in advance Tobydog Tobydog |

I suggest you wait until near the end of the 28 days period for the first NIP, and then reply to all the NIPs, putting the replies all in the same envelope, together with letter pointing out that all the offences are on the same piece of road within a few days of each other, you had not quite realised what the limit was and you were following other traffic, as a result of the NIPs you are now fully aware of the limit and that you were speeding, but because the NIPs followed each other so quickly, by the time you were fully aware of the limit, you had already committed further offences. Request that in these circumstances these offences should be treated as a single offence, as you were not able to adjust your driving in time. We have known this approach be successful in other cases. Perhaps you might get it reduced to one course and one fixed penalty.

Has the limit changed on the road recently? Have speed camera's just been enabled?
In the worst case scenario you will tot (12 points). You will have the opportunity to submit an exceptional hardship (EH) plea to reduce than ban, potentially to none. However, the impact on others carries more weight - losing your job, in itself, is unlikely to amount to EH. You need to consider alternative transport - or show it's impractical etc. -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

Jlc - thank you for your response. Whilst I commute to work, I need my car to travel to and from home visits and other agencies so it's a requirement of my job as a social worker. Theres a national shortage of and has been since I became one 20 years ago. If I lose my job I also lose my home (I live by myself and have no partner to support me) I would also not be entitled to welfare benefits. Effectively I will be destitute.
The limit hasn't changed, but I think they may have installed or enabled some cameras. I'm doing the same as I have done for over a year which is why this has come as a great shock. It's possible I will get a further ticket for the 8th of Feb and the 11th of Feb giving me a grand total of 18 points Today when I drove in to work I was really conscious to keep my speed down obviously but was being overtaken by buses and taxis and a moped in the bus lane. I wish I could put a sign up in my rear window telling other drivers why I am apparently driving so slowly. |

Assuming the offence(s) weren't in Scotland and you haven't done one in the past 3 years, you should get one offer of a speed awareness course. So if no other NIPs come through you might only end up (worst case) with 9 points
What is the location you have been caught? |

Baggie Boy - Thank you for your reply.
The location is Brighton. I already have 3 points for going over the line at a set of traffic lights. This was also in Brighton. I may receive another 2 nips tomorrow or the next day due to undertaking a commute on Friday 8th Feb and Monday 9th of Feb as I wasn't aware of the speeding issue until yester day when the first two nips arrived. Another nip came today. Altogether, including the three points I already have, the 3 new speeding nips and a further 2 nips that may come in the following days I could potentially have 18 points if all,the incidents are considered in isolation. This is after driving for 23 years and only ever receiving 3 points on my licence once in 2012 for speeding 51mphh on a dual carraigeway with a limit of 40. I'm clearly now angel when it comes to driving but I take my lead from how fast others are driving and am no speed merchant. I've got a Fiat 500 ffs This post has been edited by Tobydog8848: Wed, 13 Feb 2019 - 23:46 |

I've just read about the six month rule. It won't help me now but I neednt have accepted the 3 points I think I hAve on my licence already. I went over the line at some red lights a couple of weeks after starting work in Brighton in Feb 18. Id never driven round brighton before and dont live or vidit it. A nip was swiftly served and I replied promptly. But it wasn't until October that I received some other documents that I simply pleaded guilty to and paid a fine. I can't remember how many points I got and I've never been asked to send my licence back for points to be put on it. Ive learned where and how to check how many points I have. Now that I have a bit more hope I feel less anoxious and can face looking things up on the government website tomorrow.
I've been on this site before for help regarding parking tickets, I received a free stick on plastic holder for my car so as stick paper parking ticket to my front windscreen as per the TRO and even won a tribunal with help from you guys. But I couldn't sign in last year to ask for advice. Today because I was so desperate I tried again and realised the problem was my Hotmail email address. You guys (and gals) are invaluable. |

The traffic light offence may well have had the proceedings started within the 6 months permitted, they often wait until the bitter end.
You have to see how many you get. As you’ve found out following other drivers assuming they know what they are doing is a mugs game. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

We have known this approach be successful in other cases. Perhaps you might get it reduced to one course and one fixed penalty. This was suggested to me as well (multiple flashes on the same road, very close in time). I included a very polite letter with the NIPs and received an equally polite letter back from the police saying that unfortunately they would need to be treated separately, and reminding me that there is adequate signage and the presence of street lights, etc. so I should be well aware it's 30 without needing reminders from the first NIP. We may live in different areas, though, so it's still worth a try, right? Assuming the offence(s) weren't in Scotland and you haven't done one in the past 3 years, you should get one offer of a speed awareness course. So if no other NIPs come through you might only end up (worst case) with 9 points What is the location you have been caught? From my suite of offences recently, only the 33-in-30 was offered a course. I also had a 36-in-30 and three other higher ones, which all came first and were not offered a course. I think the threshold is really very low, must be between 33 and 35, for a 30 limit, I guess. So I don't suppose OP will qualify. |

Threshold for a course is 42 in a 30 and no police force in the UK would normally take action for 33 in a 30.
You are only eligible for one course (of the same type) every three years though, you don't get multiple 'get out of jail free' cards. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

I'd be very surprised if they really did prosecute you (or offer a course) for 33 in a 30.
