The pay and display parking machines that take coins have been bagged off in our street for one time. My wife saw a worker removing the bags the other day and asked what's going on - he said the coin machines are being reinstated because the council is losing revenue as people don't park as much using pay by phone.

He said pay by phone is doing well at the far south of the borough in the City (this is Hackney) but not so much elsewhere.

So there you have it, cash is still (par)king, to coin a phrase.

Pay by phone is fine if
  1. You already have the appropriate app installed and configured on your phone; having to do it at the time or fighting with the voice recognition system (which never works properly) is a complete pain
  2. You don't have to pay more than you do with cash - which you always do. The excuse of having to pay the operator (RingGo or whoever) is lame, as they surely save by not having to handle the cash, so there are always similar costs in handling the "payment". These charges should be outlawed in the same way that credit card fees have.

My phone doesn't even run "apps" any more, haven't been able to install one for years as it needs some sort of "IOS" that will immediately break it even more than it is broken now.


The thing that worries me about being a luddite is that pretty much everything official now assumes you have the interweb and the latest phone, so I will be trapped into paying huge amounts for home interweb until I die, even if I wanted to give it up.

Yes I did have you in mind...

Interesting that Hackney has been losing parking revenue and it surprised me given that many people I see in Tesco and on buses etc only use contactless cards now. Indeed you can't pay cash on London buses. There seems to be an attachment to parking meters.

My issue is partly like Facade's, just couldn't.
I have just "upgraded" from my old and trusty iPhone 3g.....to a 2nd hand iPhone 6 smile.gif
So I can at least now run apps like Ringo should I want to.
But, it takes 30 seconds to stuff some cash in a payment machine, get a ticket, display on dashboard and photograph it (bit OCD but....)
Number of times I seen people f4rting about with phones trying to pay, feck that for a game of soldiers.

Doesn't your car have a wee box somewhere on the dash where you can keep a few coins for just such an occasion?

People are different. People have different issues with some 'solutions'.

Setting up apps to pay for parking can be inconvenient, and sometimes they simply don't work. However, once set up (assuming that they are working), paying for parking using such apps is generally very simple.

Many people rarely use cash, or for other reasons do not always have suitable change with them to pay for parking with cash. Others apparently do. Older people parking in areas where parking is cheaper are more likely to find paying by cash easier than younger people parking in areas where parking is expensive. Being told that your car has a box which can be used to store a few coins is about as helpful to somebody who would need more than just a few coins as being told "there's an app for that" would be to somebody who does not use a smartphone.

Cashless is generally far more convenient for those who use such systems frequently, but excluding the option to pay by cash seems wrong in principle.

I still have an iphone4 (not even 4s)

I changed the battery the other day, so it should be good for another 6 years or so I hope.

However, it just won't install all these banking apps, easy pay apps etc. as it doesn't have the security, even if I did cripple it (even more) with a later IOS.

Where I find using Ringo is useful is the message saying “parking runs out in 10 minutes do you wish to extend it ?”

Only if you have said change. Before the council car park near my local station adopted Pay By Phone, it was a bit of a pain when I was regularly commuting to London. I'd actually have to seek out a real, open bank and withdraw £40 in £2 coins to give me a couple of weeks' parking money. All that gone with Pay By Phone, and as it was all on expenses, I don't have to pay the RingGo fee or have to scan in the parking ticket/receipt (it comes in email). And it saves me that valuable couple of minutes more (especially if parking some way from the machine) early in the morning - I just sort out the parking on the phone as I walk from car to station.

For £4 (now £5) /day, a 19p fee is almost justifiable. But when they charge the same for a £1 parking fee, it gets a bit extortionate (when I am paying from my own pocket).

As we go increasingly cashless elsewhere finding change I find is increasingly hard.

Having coin operated machines on streets should be a nostalgic bygone age really.

Something like RingGo isn't the same level of risk as a fully-fledged banking app. If someone nicks my phone and breaks in, what can they do? Park their car - big deal.

A bit of a stray from the subject, but talking of apps on the phone which do financial transactions, can anyone tell me the point of, say, the Esso app or the BP app (if there is one)? So, I can pay by phone for my petrol (but only at Esso stations). You know what, I have something in my pocket that allows me to buy petrol at any petrol station, and a whole lot of other things, and it's only the size of a credit card. It is, in fact, a credit card. If only more car parks had machines that read those cards, rather than relying on RingGo etc. Then ALL I would need is one credit card.

Convenience.

Have you ever had to queue to pay for fuel? Have you ever been stuck behind the strange elderly person who not only chooses to do their shopping in the petrol station shop, but wants to utilise every time consuming system there whilst holding up the entire queue?

As a matter of interest, how many different 'Pay to Park' apps are there?

I rarely have to worry about it. During my working hours, I use taxi ranks; outside of that, my wife's car has a permit for town centre parking. No cash or app required for either.

I've got four on my phone currently:

Ringgo
Paybyphone
Park Right (Westminster)
Whoosh

I mostly use Ringgo - it has won contracts from Paybyphone. Whoosh is rubbish I think and I only put it on to park at Redbridge leisure centre.
