Is it just me, or are there a lot of vehicles on the road without the front number plate attached? It's usually on the dashboard visible through the windscreen. I saw 3 on my short commute home today.
Quite an effective way of avoiding speeding tickets & PPC infractions. If pulled I imagine the conversation will go along the lines of "It got knocked off in a car park officer. I'll reattach it when I get home." "OK sir, on your way then."
So what's the damage if plod decide to pursue it? FPN or something bigger?

Has anyone else noticed an increase in the fitment of "tinted" number plates too?

In the daytime they are readable, at dusk/night, they become unreadable at anything over a vehicle length in front.

Are they legal? Or put it another way, what is there about them that could be make them illegal?

The background has to be white at the front and yellow at the back. Tinted ones don’t comply.

I was going to say "what's this no front plate nonsense" and then I saw two cars over the weekend doing exactly that, the plate was on the dashboard instead!

Its the latest 'yoof' thing, there was one in our road doing it, one day a police car was stopped outside the house, next day it was fitted to the front bumper as per the other 99.9% of cars on the road.

I used to have a pair of polarized sunglasses and it was quite surprising how many cars had obviously modified numberplates with a polarized filter on them, if I tilted my head the numbers would disappear.

Surely to alter the number plate to make it unreadable - except in certain conditions (daylight and close up) can really amount to only one thing - to avoid identification? Granted, I know people probably do it for multiple reasons (including style), but I find it remarkable that such a blatent act doesn't seem to be acted upon.

Errrr, we need real cops driving around the roads for that. And they became largely extinct years ago.

I remember on one of those "Fame hungry road police" programmes many years ago there was a chap who had taken a more low tech approach and changed the 6 to an 8 with electrical tape.

When it flagged up as non-existent and was pulled he blamed his kids who must have been messing around.

So there you are. Perhaps all these dodgy plates are just the work of hairspray wielding, clingfilm smothering kids.

(No he didn't get off but I hope he took the fine out of their pocket money.)

WE have one of these chavs around here in a modified Ford van

There is no way on Gods earth that he has ever had a front plate fixed permanently and yes it sits facing the sky on his dashboard

Plus his other plate is illegally spaced although how AR66ON spells Aaron beats me

Sometimes i feel like going out one night with some yellow paint and just spray his correct VRM on the front, would really stand out on his sparkly black livery.

But i am not like that

Regardless of spacing, beats me how AR66ON is a legally issued plate.

Well if you really want to there's ways to get him dealt with by DVLA, but you'd have to be willing to supply the evidence.

Peter i left off the last letter!

And letting the DVLA know???

They don't take much interest in the highly dubious ads that the reg firms put out do they openly advertising misspaced plates.

I doubt very much that it is an offence to sell or buy mis-spaced reg plates. You might have a 'priceless' model on which you wish to display them for some reason.

Displaying them on the road is another matter.

I have visited the Kent Police crash investigation unit based at Maidstone and, among other things, it was shown to us just how easy it was to process images of cars with (so called) modified plates.

It was also explained that the only successful method they had seen was a photographer who placed auto-flash units round his plate. They only new about it when a police car was behind and a speed camera triggered the units, the flash units completely overwhelming the image.

He was prosecuted - no idea what happened or, indeed, whether the whole story was apocryphal and just meant to impress us.

They have no powers to do anything about it, there's no offence of selling an object that happens to resemble a number plate. But they can (and will) revoke a personalised plate if they get too many reports of it being displayed incorrectly, and Aron would potentially have to pay to re-register the car if he doesn't desist.
