A local council run car park will switch to pay by card or app only next week, the parking charge is only 20p so I’ll be faced with either having to pay 20p on my card or registering for an as yet unnamed app and pay an extra 20p for the privilege.

I pay for almost everything on my card (or rather contactless on my phone) now, no matter what the amount. Phone - tap - paid. So much quicker than getting a wallet out. If they don't accept cards or have a minimum spend, I don't go there.
The only use I have for cash now is for tradesman and the like "what price can you do for cash?". A small number of people get irrationally angry about this but they are normally the ones who spend two minutes fumbling around with money |

I pay for everything in cash. If I can't pay the car park in cash, I'll park elsewhere.

I pay for everything in cash. If I can't pay the car park in cash, I'll park elsewhere. +1 Stuff Ringo, Parkmobile et al. And I want a ticket to display, none of this virtual ticket nonsense. I took the kids to the London Youth Games at Redbridge Sports Centre on Sunday. The huge car park is app or text message only and the fee is only £1 for 3 hours, or £2 all day on Sunday. No machines. The app is Whoosh, one I'd never heard of. In the end I managed to pay by text (I hope) and for that they also charge you a 50p 'convenience fee' - an oxymoron if there was ever one. It was a struggle to work it out. |

AFAIK they can no longer charge an extra fee for paying by debit/credit/contactless card. Thats what was meant to be but Hungryhouse and JustEat got round that by adding on the 50p and calling it something else- "service charge "I think it was- one of these companies has since gone bust. |

Firstly, no public authority should be allowed to refuse the Queen's money as payment of a parking charge. Secondly, I can buy a pay & display ticket with a few coins one heck of a lot faster than most people can unlock their phone, call the relevant number / install and/or open the relevant app, find the location code, faff about some more... I mean, I'm not getting any younger and I just don't have time for that. My ancient (by current standards, nowhere near worn out yet by mine ) iphone won't even download these "apps" any more, as it is on something called "IOS7" which pretty much crippled it completely in 2013.
I'm not paying a fortune for another until it physically wears out. |

What's to stop them increasing all the prices and offering a discount for paying cash? Why would they? It is so easy and cheap to get a card terminal, and rates relatively so cheap, and attracting the extra custom from those who only pay by card - it is better business. I remember when I had my own business and used to have to pay in all the cash and cheques. It was a right ballache to have to drive past a bank each night to pay it in, not to mention the risk of someone seeing you pull up by the bank in a van and have a good guess you have a lot of cash on you. I also had a safe nicked once (forced the screws out of the wall) - few £thousand gone just like that. General pain in the ar5e. This post has been edited by notmeatloaf: Thu, 14 Jun 2018 - 08:34 |

I parked up outside a pub in Brighton last week (for a non alcoholic beverage you understand). The parking meters don't take cash anymore.
1. I typed in the car reg, pressed OK. 2. Prompted to put card in card reader. Did so. 3. Entered PIN, pressed OK. 4. Stared at 'please wait' message for about 4 mins. 5. Got error message back. 6. Repeated process for another 4 mins 7. Got another error message back. 8. Repeated process but got an OK message back and a printed ticket to display on dashboard. 9. Spent ten more minutes in pub trying to access online banking to see how many times my card had been debited. Just the once, phew. Total time, about 12 mins to get P&D and another 10 for checking if they charged me correctly. It'll be cash for me from now on, if I can help it. -------------------- Sometimes I use big words I don't understand in an effort to make myself sound more photosynthesis.

To be fair that is more that councils are generally rubbish at implementing this sort of technology rather than the technology itself.
If you go to a shop or anywhere where there is competition for custom they are very able to do it in five seconds. Councils thrive on having a captive market. |

You don't imagine that they design, build and install these payment systems themselves, do you? There's a whole industry that supplies them; if the council's guilty of anything it's probably buying on the basis of price rather than quality. -------------------- Regards,

I've just replaced my Iphone3G with an Iphone6 for that reason..... updates to IOS apps had gone way beyond the phone IOS system.... so phone was basically that, a phone with a camera and some music on it. TBH only changed cos the 6 came up at the right price but will still likely only use it as a Phone, Camera and music storage. |

I use cash for nearly everything, the only exception being petrol and (infrequent) online purchases.
I refuse to go into shops or establishments that don't accept cash. |

I carry about a tenner in my wallet for those (rare) occasions when I can't use a card, and get thoroughly annoyed by the quantity of difficult-to-use shrapnel I end up with as a result of those occasions! -------------------- Regards,
