Hi,

I got 2 NIPs in a week from different police forces. 1 was 48 in a 40, and the other 49 in a 40.

I did a course about 2 and a half years ago so guessing I won't be offered another.

Any ideas what I can expect in terms of points and fines?

Thanks.

Fixed penalties for each. (3 points, £100 - or 6 points, £200 here)

What counts is the date of the offence, not the date of the course, does that offer any help?

Great, thanks for the replies. No, still within 3 years, unfortunately.

Hi again,

Thanks once more for your answers on what to expect - and I got exactly that - 2 separate letters, each for 3 points and £100 fines.

However, as they were from different police forces, I'm a little worried how long it will take to process the endorsement on my license for the first one I sent it off to, as there's a 28-day deadline from the date of the notice. I paid both fines online immediately, then sent my license to the first police force by recorded delivery. This was a week ago now, and I haven't received it back yet.

Does anyone know how long it usually takes to get your license back in the post? I know they say they return it by 2nd class business post, but is it usually a few days, couple of weeks, or could it actually be more than 28 days? And if the latter is the case, are they likely to give me a few days' extension in the circumstances?

Thanks.

Why don’t you call both forces and explain?

Bearing in mind there is no physical need for them to have your licence and you have already paid the fines you could ask police force 1 if they could call police force 2 and say they have sight of the licence and whether they would accept that. Don't ask, don't get.

Hardly, the law requires that the licence be surrounded, there is nothing to say that it must be surrounded to a specific police force. Police force A can confirm to Police force B that they have had sight of driving licence number ABC123 (although this would be in all likelihood done by secure email rather than over the phone), police force B can either accept this (why wouldn't they?) or, at worst, ask Police force A to forward the licence to Police force B. I can see no reason why the licence needs to go from Police force A to Police force B via the OP's home address.

Sounds like with A and B they're doing a pretty good job of surrounding it already. biggrin.gif

There was a physical need when they had to write the points on your paper licence. Now it is just a legal requirement, and one every police force bends anyway seeing as the RTOA 1988 says you must send your licence and counterpart, but in practice even if you have a counterpart they will not require it.

Not since 8 June 2015 it hasn’t.

Apologies, you are quite right, I forgot the requirement had been removed by the RSA 2006.

However, that act does also allow for licences to be "otherwise produced", presumably to give scope for a tick box allowing them to access your licence electronically. It would also seemingly allow police to accept it being produced to another police force.

Police force have been able to accept documents seen by other forces for decades. If you get a document producer in Devon, but live in Yorkshire, it's always been an option to name a police station in Yorkshire where you will produce the documents. Similarly when FPNs were issued at the roadside, you had the option of producing your driving licence at a police station of your choosing, there has never been any requirement that it be produced at a police station of the force that issued the ticket.
