Well this has to be in the flame pit.

The other day whilst driving along the A10 in Norfolk I noticed a small plastic disposable water bottle apparently caught in a tree branch hanging over the road. It seemed to be hanging by it's neck in a small fork so you think that's a lucky gust of wind to do that. Then a little further up was one on the other side, again hanging by the neck from a small branch. Odd there's two you think. Then another but this time it's clear it's hanging from bailer twine tied to the branch. This goes on for a few miles, every so often is a small water bottle (and just one plastic milk bottle) tied to a roadside tree with twine. Must of been a dozen or so that we saw.

Now these bottles are not at low level, some are 8 feet up or so and tied to slender branches. You would need step ladders or a vehicle to stand on to do it. Every time the bottle has no cap and is hung vertical, top uppermost. This prompted quite a discussion in the car as we looked out for the next one. I mentioned it could be some form of "dead letter drop" but then my wife pointed out that the russian FSB were probably a bit more sophisticated than that, which seemed a fair comment.....

So does it signify something to those in the know, does the use of bailer twine mean there's a secret farming organisation involved? a sort of hay based masonic lodge?

Any ideas out there?

Probably some protest against plastic bottles or some such.

I've seen people place large water bottles along their garden wall which I was told supposed to deter cats but no idea if it works or if that's the reason here.

The first one I noticed was green but the others were clear. Who goes out into the countryside and ties bottles onto branches? I know there's not much to do around here but that's sad!

It could be an Essex tradition. Sorry, East Anglian tradition.

If lorry drivers park up along there I may have a suspicion that it isn't lemonade in them.

Else google tells me that it may stem from an African (possibly European originally) then American tradition.

Well, if it possibly originates in Europe, could that be narrowed further to say that it originated in the part of Europe that is Norfolk? icon_study.gif

What you have seen (plastic bottles in trees) is probably for the tapping of Birch sap.

Its a little early for that though as the best results will be achieved in March & April.

Quite common all over eastern Europe.
Nice tasting stuff too.

Well thanks for the response - does look like some odd tradition perhaps just odd along what is a busy trunk road. When I have time it's a closer look at what trees they hang from and what if anything is in them.....

Tapping sap sprung to my mind as well but not usually in the fork of a branch?

Having found everything in Norfolk and about Norfolk weird, I don't think its the plastic bottles you should be worrying about!

Saw some in Ibiza last year.

I've got it - it's the magic bottle tree, planted by prime ministers who've lost their bottle.
