Hi there
I have a very old Yaris car (2003 model) which I haven't driven in for 2 years and even the engine isn't even turning on and I want to scrap it. I have had a look at online quotes and most I can seem to get is 100 pounds. The one I found quote on was scrap car network website. Has anyone used them? Also what exactly do I need to let DVLA know my car is scrapped and avoid any further trouble moving forwards. |

I believe you should get a certificate form the scrapper to show that the car has indeed been scrapped.

yes that was my understanding too and they said they would give me one within 7 days. But they also said I need to give my v5 to DVLA?

.?? You're trying to forensically analyse the term 'take to' and draw a distinction between this and them coming to you?? It might be relevant because you've not explained who are the 'scrap car network'. So, are they an ATF? For these purposes, whether they come to you or vice-versa is not relevant. In many ways this is similar to ordinary waste from your property for which you have a Duty of Care and which you are legally bound to pass to a licensed waste carrier or take to a licensed waste facility. Sounds daunting, but in reality your council is a licensed carrier and the alternative is your council-provided recycling etc. centre. But if you use 'We'll Move It Inc.' and they're fly-by-night cowboys and your waste ends up in a farmer's field and it can be traced back to you, then the Environment Agency would be over you like a rash. So you know the requirements for scrapping your vehicle and you know the specifics, we don't. |

There is provision to tell DVLA youve paased you vehicle to be scrapped. Make sure you do that and also that you get papperwork from who ever is taking it at the time. Not "we'll send you something in a few days". No pappey no takey.

I scrapped an old motor couple of years back..... best price on an auction site for scrappers, local guy came and collected, transferred the funds by bank transfer before they loaded it up.
I went online and notified DVLA it had been scrapped and gave the details of the scrap merchant before they had cleared the end of the road...simples. Same with youngest's Fiesta last year when she wrote it off..... I declared it scrapped moment insurance declared it a write off, again gave scrapper details online. It's simple, quick and protects you. |

No pappey no takey. due to social distancing, they wont be giving me any paperwork apart from putting through my door their details so I can use it for letting DVLA know. They will provide me with certification of destruction in 7 days |

There's a section of the V5C titled V5C/3 Selling or transferring your vehicle to a motor trader, insure or dismantler - Please fill in and return to DVLA (see notes over the page).
You send that part to DVLA yourself (keep a copy and get proof of postage) and give the rest of the V5C to the company that's picking it up. End of. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

As I have said already they dont take v5 as 1 i dont have it and 2 even if I did they are maintaing social distancing. Social distancing is largely irrelevant, as you can give something to someone without going within 2 meters of them (I guess you're giving them the keys). All you can do is type up a letter with your details, the details of the vehicle, and the details of whoever "they" are, sign it and send it off in the post. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

You don't need to know where it is being scrapped, just the company name and address who takes it. The Fiesta I never saw after the crash, it was recovered by a company arranged by the insurance company, taken to local yard for inspection, declared a write off and transferred to someplace in Worcestershire (IIRC) to be scrapped. Insurance gave me details of the scrap company, I put them into DVLA online transfer notification, got email confirmation, end of story. For all I know, it may have ended up in Scotland You may need V5c number, can't remember. You do exactly the same if you sell a car or if you buy one, register change of keeper online (seller does it) Protects you from issues if the new owner cops a speeding or parking ticket after they drive away. And it doesn't get lost in the post. |

I guess as they are paying me money and taking it away they will be the registered owners so hence i need to let DVLA know. However i dont have a v5 but I believe I can write a letter to them |
