I'm looking at a wheelchair accessible vehicle, a few vehicles that I'm interested in have Taxi signs on the front/rear.
Are there any regulations on displaying a taxi sign on a personal vehicle? Thanks |

I imagine you're looking at 'black cabs'. Others may have better advice, but I think that so long as you don't illuminate the Taxi sign there should be no problem. Price Philip and Steven Fry used to drive these as private cars. Whether it's a wise choice is a whole different question.
One downside is that you'll have to look out for drunks and/or idiots leaping out to try to hire you, light or not. |

I don't think there are any issues, unless you are thinking of copying Noel Edmonds little ruse and driving in the bus lanes.

You cannot display the word 'Taxi' on a vehicle that is not licensed as such under the Town (Police Clauses) Act 1847. To do so would constitute illegally plying for hire.
Your best bet would be to cover up the word in some way. It is the word 'Taxi' that is relevant, not the style of vehicle. There are many examples of TX4s being used privately but without the word 'Taxi' being displayed. I'm not convinced that merely displaying the word "TAXI" alone is sufficient to be plying for hire. Each case would be fact specific but the authorities suggest something more, i.e. being exposed for hire. -------------------- Moderator

Why would anyone want to display "taxi" on their everyday car anyway?
Not to OP said black cab "style" vehicles so basically its just a belingo or Peugeot! |

Berlingos and Peugeots, along with other marques, were converted to comply with taxi licensing requirements by specialist companies, eg CabDirect. These conversions included putting transfers(?) on the vehicle as permanent marking.

I was thinking vehicles like these, although most of the TAXI signs look pretty easy to remove... As much as I'd like to replace for a "Dad's Taxi" sign... I'd probably not

These conversions included putting transfers(?) on the vehicle aspermanent marking. Which are very easily removed. Nothing is permanent. Even if you left the roof sign it would be a simple job to remove the "taxi" emblem. Im at a loss as to why the OP should want a vehicle that is modified to a basic, durable trim level rather than a more specialised multi passenger vehicle without the (in some cases) complicated not to mention expensive rear wheel steering |

I believe it's only the Mercedes Vito conversions that have rear wheel steering to meet the TfL turning circle spec.
The Town Police Clauses (Miscellaneous Provisions) Act 1847 mentioned above prohibit the display of the word taxi unless it is a licenced taxi. It is also in the 1982 Act, the name of which escapes me at the moment. |

Somehow i completely missed that bit in your OP. I get your drift. My only issue would be mileage and wear and tear, not so much on a Vito but that (if in a metroplitan city) might have rear steering, not that it cant be left switched off but expensive to maintain. Always look for privately owned ones. |

you must remover all taxi license plates and the stickers with the taxi license number on, even if they are out off date!
As for the taxi begging light just put blank on or put sticker over it. you be good to go, but you best to ring or email council department of transport/taxi and asking them, as every council has its own bylaws to do with taxis. |

Stating the obvious the OP is hardly likely to want to drive around with "taxi" pladtered over his everyday ride. Taxi licence plates would have to be removed by the seller. Why ring anyone?
Once the plates are off its a decommissioned taxi, so becomes an everyday car. |

I drive taxis can tell you for fact the seller does not need to remove the plates, most taxi sold on with plates still on and in date! |

Their rules say QUOTE The licence plates shall at all times remain the property of the Council and must be returned within seven days to the Council if the vehicle ceases to operate as licensed Hackney Carriage or Private Hire vehicle.

Only if its being tranfered to another taxi badge holder with the intention of using it as a taxi, who then in turn has to return it and get a new one issued. The OP is neither. |
