I’m sure you’ve heard it a thousand times before but got caught by an unmarked police car with a speed gun car doing 88 in a 60, overtaking on a long straight bit of road. Weather conditions were good as was visibility. It’s no excuse I know but I’m not sure what happens next.

I was given the pep talk at the roadside and advised I was 2 mph over the 86mph limit for getting a fixed penalty so it looks like I will be getting a summons. I’ve got a clean licence atm. I can’t quite remember everything the officer told me as I was shaken up by the whole process (and I know it serves me right btw) but understood I would receive something through the post. I can’t temember what he said for the time frame. Taking into account the speed I was doing the guidance implies I will get 4-6 points or a short ban and a fine around £500. I’m not planning on contesting it as I was caught fair and square. I assume I will definitely have to go to court but don’t know what the letter I will get is going to say. Any information would be useful. I haven’t told my husband yet as I am sure he will go ballistic and just want to have all the facts before I break it to him, and preferably after intercepting the letter that will be coming before he does. ohmy.gif Thanks in advance.

It will probably end up as a Single Justice Procedure Notice (SJPN), which you can plead guilty to and it will be processed without the need to court. Expect to wait close to 6 months from the offence date before hearing anything.

Thanks for your response BaggieBoy. I was lead to believe I’d get something through the post within a couple of weeks. The officer just took my details at the roadside and did a licence check on my car. I don’t remember signing anything so assumed I would have to sign a formal document.

Next paper work will be court related (SJPN).

Unless they offer a fixed penalty (unlikely) it could take nearly 6 months to the SJPN (summons in plain English).

Thanks for your responses everyone. So I won’t get any more correspondence until the SJPN? They inferred I’d get some correspondence within 14 days. If my car insurance is up for renewal before the SJPN I assume there is some convictions pending thing I have to tell them about. How come it takes 6 months? That’s nuts!

You may receive something but there’s no requirement.

Yes, pending prosecutions will need to be declared if they ask.
