Hello everyone
I was driving on the B653 - Lower Luton Road near welwyn garden city. Had cruise control set to 35, looked at google maps and said speed camera ahead. No signs telling me its a 30 as it was a 40 for a long stretch before this. Going past the camera, i then see maps telling me its a 30mph zone with maps telling me i was doing 34mph, digital speedo on car showing 35mph. Passenger told me he didnt see any flash from the camera. Once there were no cameras and it was a 40 zone again, I hit cruise control again at 35mph, with car saying 35 but maps saying 34mph constant. Is there any chance of me getting caught out? I have already taken speed awareness course last year being caught out by a ****** sitting in a van with a speed camera. This post has been edited by roaddestroyer: Thu, 1 Oct 2020 - 14:26 |

There is a chance you've been caught of course. But enforcement starts at 35mph which would be at least 36 on your speedo so probably not.
Were there signs saying it was a 40? If not then as you know the street lights mean it's a 30 limit, no other signage is needed (or even permitted) once inside the 30 limit. As a matter of interest why was cruise set to 35 if you genuinely thought it was a 40? 30 signs look to be here..... https://www.google.co.uk/maps/place/A1000+%...33;4d-0.1985009 -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

The road before which I joined was a 40mph with signs saying 40 and there was a camera there so I just stuck CC on and left it thinking the next camera was the same speed. Evidently not.
And I usually stick CC on 5mph lower than the speed camera limit in case of scenarios like today when the limits lower! This post has been edited by roaddestroyer: Thu, 1 Oct 2020 - 13:36 |

No part of Broadwater Road has a 40 limit, and it seems an odd road to use cruise control on, are you sure that is where you were? Anyway, satnavs have got better with speed limits but are not error-free and you would do better to rely on the road signs.

Balls to the flipping wall. I got the wrong road.
It was on B653 - Lower Luton Road. I had feeling something was wrong when i clicked the link ^^^ Have edited the post name to reflect my stupid error. Anyways, I have no clue why the speed changed from 40mph to 30mph because just a short while later, it went back up to 40? This post has been edited by roaddestroyer: Thu, 1 Oct 2020 - 14:27 |

As Logician has said, satnavs are not 100% accurate, you must pay attention to the signs. |

A quick search on pepipoo proves there are a few people who have been caught out by the same camera because of the alternating speed signs. I would just like a bit more information on speed cameras and whether I made it into the leeway or not as I nor passengers could spot any flash from the camera |

Enforcement starts at 35mph - without a flash it seems you've scraped though due to this threshold. Only a 2 week wait for the Registered Keeper can answer for sure. Ahh thanks guys. I just went for a drive locally on single carriageway, was empty so put CC back on to 35mph and used maps again to check speed based on app and at 35, maps said 34mph so my digital speedo is 1mph off. I know I shouldn't use maps to judge speed but a quick google search proves a GPS app on a mobile device is more accurate than the speedo on any car due to signal positionings and all that jazz.
Ive got a strong feeling im in the clear but will be back to update either if I get a NIP or in 2 weeks. This post has been edited by roaddestroyer: Thu, 1 Oct 2020 - 17:49 |

Why it became a 30 is pretty much irrelevant if it did and the limit is lawfully applied then you have to comply with it.

I got caught there myself and paid the fixed penalty, then two years later another nasty brown envelope arrived and I opened it cursing, but it turned out to be a refund of the fine and cancellation of the points because they had done an audit of speed limits set by TRO's and discovered that particular camera had never been properly authorised and had to do a host of refunds. Not only was the limit change in a stupid location, it was not even legal. By chance I met the man who found the error a few years later and was able to thank him.
Unfortunately for the OP, if he has been caught. it is all now legal as far as I know. -------------------- |

@logician thats very interesting!
Its been a 30 limit on that stretch for many years, its well signed and the camera is obvious. Previous to the camera i believe there were fatals on that stretch. This post has been edited by mickR: Thu, 1 Oct 2020 - 22:02 |

Luckily, in this case you got the right(ish) answer. |

As has already been said, don't believe all you google, GPS is accurate but takes time to stabilize, sudden speed changes are not instant refected and can take a few seconds to change on the GPS speed. If you were on a reasonabaly flat road with cruise at 35 then 32-33 on a modern car is probably your true speed so I wouldn't worry too much |

I hit cruise control again at 35mph, with car saying 35 but maps saying 34mph constant. Is there any chance of me getting caught out? If you regularly rely on cruise set to 35 in a 30, then yes, there is a good chance of being caught out sooner or later. It won't take much of a downhill slope for your speed, already probably around 33, to creep up to the magic 35 just at the wrong time. Maybe you should revisit what you learned in your speed awareness course. |

Well it's best to try and avoid going on a refresher course
