Hi Everyone,

I've received a police offer statement regarding an alleged speeding offence.

When pulled over, I'm sure the officer said he'd got me on a Vascar and showed me a "box" on his dash which I 'm sure had red digital numbers on it - he said one was time, another was distance, and the other was speed. What equipment can this have been? It was definitely not any kind of video monitor.

In his statement, he said he used a Police Pilot and I can't find any pictures of the "box" with the red digital readout on it, so there is a bit of confusion over what equipment was used to record the speed.

Also, whatever unit this is, does it have some kind of "memory recall" on it? I'm sure nothing was displayed on it when I got in the car until he pressed something.

If anyone can clarify what this equipment could have been, I would appreciate it!

Take a look at http://www.pepipoo.com/Provida_screen.htm and http://www.pepipoo.com/VASCAR.htm on the website and see if any of that kit looks like what you were shown.

It definitely wasn't either of those.
There was a monitor in the car, in the center console, but what he showed me was a box, mounted high up on the dash slightly to the left with three red, digital displays on them. He said one was time, another distance, and the other speed, and its the speed from there I'm being prosecuted for.

Also, I don't think anything was displayed on this device when I get into the car or for several minutes until he either pressed a "recall" button or switched it on. I could be wrong, but that's why I'm asking if these devices have a "recall" button.

The red digital readout on the left is definitely the same "calculator display" type, but I thought the three sets of digits were in the row and the unit wasnt as tall as that and was wider, although I could be wrong on that part.

It is likely that the Officer refered to the check as a VASCAR check when he spoke to you using Vascar as a general term. A bit like refering to a Hoover intead of a vacuum cleaner. Vascar was the original average speed meter and others joined the band waggon. Such checks are often referred to as Vascar checks irrespective of the equipment used.

As Slushpuppy states the VASCAR (Visual Average Speed Computer and Recorder) come in various forms, Police Pilot being one of them. All operate in exactly the same way....recording time/distance. All the devices have a memory recall where the operator can go back through their checks, recalling previous checks made by them.
hope this helps

That's very helpful, thank you very much.
Would you know if the memory recall feature has a date/time attached to it so it can be tied to a particular incident?
