Driving to work I am now besieged by radio adverts to sign up with Slater & Gordon and their action against VW.
They are claiming to be getting 50% of the value of the vehicles (even if you only leased the thing!) as compensation for something. What for? Compensation for paying less VED than they should have? Compensation for unwittingly damaging the environment more than they expected to whilst driving- how will that help? (ooh I took 20 years off someone's life, rather than only 15, £10,000 will help me get over it ) What actual financial loss have they suffered? (especially the leasers) I'm not against fining VW and giving the money to the NHS or something, but if I were presiding over this I'd just throw it out as nonsense. I can recall when Heseltine closed the Warren Spring Environmental Research Lab (part of DTI) which carried out the environmental monitoring across the country on behalf of DoE including the emission testing of engines for the UK manufacturers on the rolling roads in the Vehicle Testing Bays. PA Consulting produced at the time a self-serving report that 'showed'private industry could do the testing 'more efficiently'. Rover Group (inc LR) at that time was running about 8 chassis dyno's, then there were Jaguars (6 at that time I believe) Ford had a number at Dunton, plus MIRA (2) and Millbrook (about 8 at that time), type approval was already conducted at manufacturers own labs. the 2 (as I recall) at Warren Springs were meaningless. If the DTi wanted to test they could use the 2 independents of MIRA or Millbrook and they did, I recall an two exercises at MIRA. The first was comparing CO2 and looked at Cyclist right up to Range Rovers (the highest CO2 at that time), the second was the most amusing, it was a data collection of emissions over a used vehicle life, the bounty offered to owners was such that a number of MIRA employees rushed out to buy the cars they wanted to test as the car ownership was then pretty much free for 2 years. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!
