Firstly thanks for taking the time to read this!

I've had my licence for 4 years. I have 2 years NCB, no previous speeding fines or speed awareness courses.

I believe everyone speeds sometimes, even excessively at least a couple of times. I admit I made a big mistake which will never happen again, and I was caught by a mobile speed camera van doing 62mph on a 40mph road - just my luck. Was hiding behind a tree in a different location.

I have my NIP which I intend on sending straight away, but I'm wondering what will happen? There is a small table on the second sheet which says the speed awareness threshold for 40mph is up to and including 53mph - obviously the speed they recorded me doing goes over this.
If you have to know my explanation, my car is quite fast and I was overtaking but went a little too fast - this was a very wide road but I felt it was still safe as there were no pedestrians or crossings and a two lane road. This will never happen again and I will now drive like an OAP all the time, It was a stupid mistake and I'm very annoyed with myself.

I just looked at quotes and insurance shot up from £600 to £800.

What could happen to me? Is it 6 points and a fine or 3 points and a fine? Or are there chances where I can actually get a speed awareness course?

Any insight would be greatly appreciated.

Thank you

There is no chance of a course, you can expect to be offered a fixed penalty of three points and £100.
The question of whether or not is was safe to speed has no relevance.
You will have to notify your insurers either immediately or more likely on renewal but you will have to read the terms of your policy to find out which.

Thank you so much for your reply, would it not be 6 points? Or is this only for those who take it to court and not accept the fixed penalty?

I understand the question of if it was safe to speed has no relevance, I was simply stating why in case anyone wondered why I was at that speed. I am not creating an excuse, simply explaining.

I will let the insurers know once I get a renewal. I hope it stays below £800 but we will see, and 3 points would be a huge relief over 6! I will definitely never drive like this again.

Correct.

Is it not 150% of weekly income? And isn't 62mph considered a major offence and not a minor offence as it's more than 20mph over the speed limit?

The usual point for court is 66mph. A fixed penalty should be the outcome.

This is a relief of sorts, thanks. I thought the hope of a speed awareness course was a bit far fetched. Do they usually get back to me in 14 days with a fixed notice + £100 fine?

There's no set time for them to respond. But around 2 weeks wouldn't be unusual.

They will get back to you when they get back to you. You will receive a Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty. The conditional part is that you cannot accept it if you have 9 or more points (current at the date of offence). If you accept the offer (send off your licence and pay the £100 fixed penalty as per the instructions in the COFP) you will get 3 points and that will be the end of the matter. If you do not accept the offer of a fixed penalty (or do not comply with the requirements), the speeding offence will go to court.

Obviously, this is assuming that you send back the s. 172 driver nomination form in a timely manner - else you are likely to get 6 points and a large fine for that.

The guidelines for fixed penalties are:
30 limit - 35 - 49
40 limit - 46 - 65
50 limit - 57 - 75
60 limit - 68 - 85
70 limit - 79 - 95

Thank you for clearing this up. I have no intention of acquiring more points than I have to. Ideally I'd have none and pay a dearer fine (£300-£450) as this would offset extra £800-1000 insurance cost over the next 5 years. Surely a second option like this would work well for both parties?

I will send off the NIP stating it was me driving come Monday. And as soon as they reply, I will send the documents required to accept the 3 point fixed penalty and £100 fine. I assume I should send everything 1st class signed for?

Thanks again everyone for your helpful replies, I honestly truly appreciate it!

So rich people could just pay higher fines but never get points... Excellent - constantly exceed the limit - it's only money!

Maybe give the option at least once? I think £500 extra for the government would be far more useful as most drivers would opt for it.

Why? Many insurance companies don't add anything for one SP30.

Oh really? Comparethemarket shows mine goes up by £200. I assumed this will be every year until the 5 years disclosure is up?

Going up by £200 is very unusual, are you sure it's an otherwise identical quote?

No, it will reduce year on year with usually nothing in the last year.

To be honest your 'buy yourself out the points' is completely laughable if you act think about it seriously.

It was simply to give the fine to the government VS the insurance company instead. And yes I see how flawed it is, just an idea.

And I didn't change anything but declare 3 points and a £100 fine (I'm assuming). My quote went up from £600 without any convictions to £800.

Maybe I could get the quote withoit any convictions and give them the reference, and ask them to add on the convictions to the quote + see what they can do over the phone.

I truly hope it's no more than 3 points and a £100 fine.

The NIP says exceeding 40mph in contravention of a local traffic order - manned equipment speed 62mph.

Does this mean they're just talking about the speeding offense and no other driving ones, like crossing over lines too early?

It means what it says. If they were talking about other offences, it would say so

Okay thanks, so from all the information provided I should be good to fill out the NIP, photocopy it and send it 1st class signed for on Monday?
