Apparently:

‘It is under the regulation in Japan that all private owned automobile must have a specific parking space. Parking by the roadside is prohibited. The width and length of the space should be sufficient for your vehicle and must be within 2 km from your registered residence address. You need to find a parking location like monthly car parking renting, your landlord, building owner, real estate agent then request for an official document to proof that the space is yours.’

Could probably use this system to avoid the below situation...

The bit about "the terms of his car insurance mean that his vehicle has to be left outside his house at night." doesn't sound right - every car insurance I've ever had only asks if it's parked on the road, on a drive or in a car park.

I'm covered for only third party if I leave the kit car outside the main residence at night (as in, same street) but if I leave it around the corner on a different street, fully comprehensive cover for overnighting!

Insurance policies are odd.

Probably there’s more to the Salford story than we know about, which wouldn’t be surprising.

However what’s the opinion on the Japanese parking system? I have family in Japan and they are shocked at how we in the UK are able to purchase a car (of any size) and expect to park it without prior permission.

It’s not about residents permit, it’s that you have to have a space for your car.

What a spectacular own goal!

If the lines were painted by mistake that would be obvious in the TRO.

1 or 2, but circa 40 tickets, how many was it going to be before he stopped parking there.

I can imagine that on street resident parking is becoming a thing of the past especially in central London.
I would not compare UK to Japan though. Japanese people have different mentality. This country is twice as big, but population is twice as big and I can imagine that cities are far more congested.

I have started a topic about Zipcars and how they IMHO disrupt local on street resident parking in my area. Whatever authority signed up to this scheme falsely assumed that on street parking has capacity to saturate thousands of Zipcars. The result is residents get parking tickets because there is nowhere to park.

I'm dubious of the reporting, particularly of the requirement to park outside his house.
That doesn't imply immediately outside. How could it?
If there is such a term, if he parks 2 miles away from home, he's parked outside his house.
The guy and his "partner" seem to be real "Brains of Britain" types, thinking they can park on DYLs because they asked for them and they're immediately outside the house. How many tickets did he need to accrue before he realised parking there might not be a great idea?

Not too sure the double yellows were painted at their request. I live on a cul de sac with a school at the end, and there’s been many residents complaining of traffic, but still I can’t believe we would be able to get the council to put down double yellows to discourage parking on our road.

Don't know about that but my son's girlfriend, who's Japanese and staying with us, thinks I'm mental in my communication efforts. We are both fluent, but sadly in different languages.

I often think the same when I try to communicate with my wife or daughter.
Jokes I find hilarious, they think are shocking (make of that what you will),
They could sit and watch "Friends" or "Miranda" and be enthralled. I never was.

It appear from the pictures that the Salford couple have a driveway as well.

The TRO is easily available online https://www.salford.gov.uk/media/391188/may...street-plan.pdf

They do but they’ve got two cars and the driveway is only big enough for one.

It's sensible, given their circumstances.

How can I leave my car somewhere else when it says in my insurance that it's parked outside my house at night? I'm getting in a lot of debt.

The guy is a moron, no insurance company in the world would have such a requirement. What if someone else has parked outside your house? And even if there were such a stupid requirement, surely it would be cheaper to change insurance company than risk £35 a day in parking penalties? Sometime I think there should be a mandatory IQ test before people are allowed to have children.
