Sounds like a faulty hard drive

I've still got an old one from this same laptop from about 7/8 years ago so I'll try changing it over and seeing if it works!

Had some pretty good IT advice on this forum before so I thought I'd ask here first.

I've got a 13 year old laptop- previously had Vista, now has Windows 7.

When starting up, it always takes at least 2/3 attempts as it reboots during the Windows login process. Theres a click and then it restarts.

If I get past that point, the screen will either freeze completely, or it suddenly just goes all lines across it. I then have to take the battery and charger out to reboot it.

Once it gets going, its fine. But it can be a good 15 minutes from trying to get started initially to getting it up and running without crashing/dying/rebooting.

Any ideas on a cheap fix?

I'm trying to avoid a new laptop- partially because I had a newer laptop which wasn't a patch on this one, and partly because I have a work laptop and only use my own one occasionally now (maybe once a week or so). The cost of them puts me off as well... call me tight but I'd rather spend my money on holidays or changing my car.

I'm confused. Why aren't you pursuing the bodyshop? The cars paint should have been able to withstand some grit- its a pretty common feature on UK roads.

More so, if you could see the salt was pea-sized pieces, why did you not hang significantly back from the truck?

I'm not sure if its possible- others will have to advise. But could you do a freedom of information to the highways authority to find out how many other drivers complained about the salt coming out of that truck on that day? If there were other complaints, perhaps you've got more of a chance. If nobody else has complained of damage I think your issue should be with the bodyshop or your driving so close to the truck with soft paint.

My chosen bodyshop had to submit photographs and their estimate to the esure either via Audatex, or email. Esure’s “mechanics” (as they called them) would then make an assessment, presumably to verify that it’s a real place rather than to veto the cost, since legally the choice of repairer is mine.

Audatex... where the bodyshops pay £15 or so just to carry out and submit an estimate.

No wonder its cheaper using backstreet repairers.

Who's pushing you towards the approved repairer? If its a dealership, I'd place money on it being because they have a tie to the approved one. If its the finance company, I have to ask why you've been in touch with them to tell them about the bump.

I'd use the one the insurers recommend. The insurers really 'ride' those garages hard, so if theres any problems you'll have the insurer backing you up all the day.

I do hate the additional excess being charged though- its not ESure you're with is it?

What about train driving? Much better money, better hours and better work/life balance.

Try getting into train driving... there were 12700 people (myself included btw) who applied for 100 jobs in Scotland a couple of years ago!

Newcastle seems like a terrible place to taxi. Cheap fares, far too many taxi (you never ever have to wait for one down there) and the drunks are worse than most cities I've been in.

The drivers I've experienced are dodgy as hell- one didn't want to take us a short journey (suggested we walked) and another didn't know how to get to the Citroen garage in Gateshead- got really aggressive when I criticised his driving as he turned up a no entry street too. I choose to walk from the city over the bridge now on a night out now rather than give the shysters my cash.

As for Carlisle... I can't imagine it being lucrative.

Why not train as a bus driver or similar? Or Stobarts down your way have a driver training scheme if you fancied your HGV...

£55 for the Sixt decal is seriously ripping it. I order vehicle graphics regularly and for a logo that size I pay £14 (cost price). Fitting would take less than 20 minutes- so if the vehicles already in the bodyshop thats less than 4TU's on the Audatex system.

The Transit door is also a lot more than what Ford dealers sell them for I think.

Nothing that will help get you below £1k though so whats the point...

Did they tell you about the £75 admin fee when they went over the excess with you when picking up the vehicle? I've never been told about the admin fee- just the excess itself.

Pay by parking is great. I hated it at first, but I never have coins- when I get home they go in a bucket and I take it to the coin machine at Asda the day before I go on my main holiday each year for some extra drink funds.

Nowadays, people paying cash for anything just seems ridiculous. You can lose it, never recover it and it offers little record of your activities. Digital transactions and card transactions allow full tracking and accountability.

The best thing they could do is convert all the machines to not take coin and to take contactless card instead. Contactless is the best thing ever made.

Why not play it safe and get a pickup? The Amarok is lovely, although the Hilux is brilliant to drive and exceptionally comfy on long trips.

A local town took on decrim parking around 18-24 months ago.

They renewed the existing meters with the ones you need to put your registration number into. In the car park I'm concerned about, you get your first 2 hours free, and its £1 an hour thereafter to a maximum of 4 per day. If you go over 4, the meter won't allow a ticket to be issued- it seems to record how many hours of ticket you have had each day.

I know someone who got a ticket for overstaying by a few hours (used 2 hours free parking and never paid for any more- forgot all about the car apparently). I'm not looking to help her, but it got me thinking- if the TRO doesn't state the need to enter a registration number, is any ticket issued enforcable?

I requested the TRO from the council and recieved 3 back. From 1999, 2001 and 2006. There has been nothing changed since then.

The following are issues I can see:

- Mentions excess charge notices- now that its decrim, surely these should be PCN's?
- Mentions the ticket must be displayed facing the front window of the vehicle, but the signage in the car parks does not convey this and simply says it must be displayed.
- ECN's seem to have varied prices depending on whether the car has an expired ticket, no ticket or is over 12 or 24 hours in its stay. Yet PCN's are advertised as £30/£60 on signage.
-Charges are recorded on the 1999 and 2001 orders. 2001 states 10p per 20 minutes, but this is now incorrect and the 2006 order says nothing about costs.

On the basis of the above, how likely do you think it would be that an appeal can be lodged? Do they make any difference to the enforcability of tickets?

Why hold off for years before saying a word?

You could ask that of most of these sort of allegations.
Odd how the two allegations were made so close together!

I think the really historic ones carried out before the Saville reveal may be real, as there were clear cover ups by organisations when they were reported.

However any allegations in the past 5 years I'd expect to be reported very quickly, given the current hype on the matter which means even the most minor allegations are taken seriously and investigated by employers, police and media alike.

I don't rush to defend Salmond. I think hes a glory hunter and a very arrogant guy. That said, the most charismatic UK politician I'm aware of in the past 25 years.

I really don't believe hes guilty of this- the facts will all come out in the end, but with all the sex scandals coming out the past few years, and the fact these allegations are based on a time before the Indy vote, I'd have thought the victim would have made the complaint when he was more in the public eye. Why hold off for years before saying a word?

I felt like the lawyer was very scattergun- just throwing any argument that might get a tiny bit of traction out there.

Although 7 hours of questioning the speed camera guy. Thats less time than most relationships nowadays.

Depending on the age of the van, I think the insurer is mad contesting this, and is just making the OP's life more stressful.

Assuming a bumper and wing need done, your well over a grand by the time painting and fitting is done. As someone else said, a headlight bracket could be snapped- theres another couple of hundred. Has the wing then creased the door and a repair is needed there too? So many things could have shifted.

Van hire- say around £100 a day depending on the legnth of the van. Multiply that by time hired. Ford parts can be a nightmare to get in quickly, so the third parties van could have been off the road for a lot longer than to be desired.

Collection and delivery by the repairers- add another £250.

I know the OP has said van hire etc. isn't included in the claim, but I'd want to double check that, as if its not you can expect another claim in shortly.

It would be truly bizarre circumstances if his friends spiked his drinks then called the police to get him done for drink driving, then openly admitted they had spiked his drinks afterwards. Probably a world first.

Even if it did happen it doesn't materially change things anyway. There is no dispute he was over the limit when caught, no matter how the police knew. Making an already unusual story even more extraordinary may just act as a distraction in court.

The crucial thing now is to get drinks and timings because that is the meat of the case for the forensic toxicologist to chew on.

I have done some mad things when out on the lash but I have to say never got the mate who's driving me home slightly tipsy then dobbing him in and getting them arrested. Maybe I have lead a sheltered life but I think more likely that even if you were out wearing a strait jacket supervised by nurses you would see that as a step too far.

Think enemies... could he have wound up someone who he was out with and they've done it out of malice? i.e. it wasn't a friend afterall, or it was an ex-friend?

I've done it when someone was swerving between the hard shoulder and lane 3 of the motorway in a Sprinter van. I couldn't get past and his speed was anything between 40 and 70. Took 10 minutes for an unmarked BMW to come up behind me and stop him. I came off at the next junction and he was in handcuffs, so I'm guessing they had him for more than drink driving.

I'm not saying I'm a saint- I'm certain I've been over the limit the following morning without realising it, but on a night out if I have the car I genuinely don't mind being stopped and breathalised, provided the attitude of the police is ok (75% of the time it is).

I don't mind it provided people don't rip it and force their way in right at the cones when there have been oppertunities to merge further back. I also have a policy of never letting Audi's, Mini's or certain BMW's infront of me in these situations.

As soon as I know a lane up ahead is shut, I do tend to get out of it at the earliest opportunity before the que is at a stand still. One of the reasons it has to stop/start is to let people in further up ahead... if people merged while the traffic was still free flowing I don't think the que would take anything like as long as it does.

I get a feeling anything 20mph over in Scotland goes to court these days (perhaps other than in a 70 limit) as I've noticed a few instances of 21+ over going to court.

As car sharing clubs and short term hires become more popular (potentially even the norm in some cities), I think this is something councils will need to address. If you hire a car you need to park it somewhere, and ultimately your not using the permit all year round, so will be helping congestion in the long run. Therefore it only seems fair councils accommodate parking requirements.

The speed limits for vans etc. are part of your driving test, so perhaps the hire companies assume you'll be aware of them, what with having passed a driving test. Its a stupid, outdated limit, but such is life.

I've also never hired a van without there being a sticker on the dash or windscreen indicating the speed limits for the vans. I doubt they'll accept any liability based on the absence of one though.

I've had a few elderly French cars, as they are inevitably amazingly comfortable seat wise. The worst was a Citroen AX which had an electrical fault where every couple of weeks the headlights would turn off when you were driving. The way to fix them was to turn it off for five seconds then turn it back on. Fine on a motorway, less good on a country road.

Like any intermittent electrical fault on a French car it is impossible to fix and is probably original to the production line.

I got it solely on the basis of the fact it has a wine bottle holder in the driver and passenger doors, which when you're a student is enough to get you laid. Tested.

Indicator stalk- it used to happen on my ZX and the new stalk cured it. Shoogling the stalk also helped sometimes.

Lights also stayed on all the time in the rain. Central locking would work rapidly when using the key in the door.

Comfy as sin though for a car which would have been 15/16 years old when I had it.

You should feel bad, it sounds like he had gone out of his way to help you and you didn't put your hand in your pocket for the sake of £120?

It's people like you that end up sending people to claims management firms because they don't want the hassle of someone agreeing to pay at the scene then playing silly buggers when they actually get the bill.

He didn't have a phone number to call him back on...

Devils advocate.

I've benefited from the own goal rule in the past. I didn't know it at the time, so was amazed to have won (just over £200 off £5). A lot of people I subsequently told seemed to already know about it, so is it common knowledge?

If the bet was placed online, did you have access to their T&C's before placing the bet?
