Hi all

Non UK based here...

I believe UK plod needs a reasonable suspicion to stop and search.
From what I have seen everyone on the street is being directed through the detector.

What legislation would cover this as surely mass reasonable suspicion wouldn't be possible?

Thanks in advance.

Google is working again now - "A police officer has powers to stop and search you if they have ‘reasonable grounds’ to suspect you’re carrying:" Reasonable grounds and reasonable suspicion are NOT the same thing.

My wording probably wasnt the best between grounds and suspicion.

I fail to see how the mass scanning is reasonable grounds.. Except for possibly this section.

"You can only be stopped and searched without reasonable grounds if it has been approved by a senior police officer. This can happen if it is suspected that:

serious violence could take place
you’re carrying a weapon or have used one
you’re in a specific location or area"

Wonder who or if anything has been signed..

I’m not sure what you mean by “mass reasonable suspicion”. I don’t believe that going through a metal detector is a search and if there is a positive result that could amount to reasonable grounds for a search. I also suspect that a direction under the Criminal Justice and Public Order Act 1994 or similar may be in force. What is your precise issue?

Sounds like a s.60 CJPO 1994. Have a look at this:-
https://www.met.police.uk/SysSiteAssets/med...-and-search.PDF

As you can see, "reasonable grounds" do not apply.

Seems unlikely they would use them to check everyone, as most people carry fairly non-offensive keys.

I've always thought that metal defector arches were the TV Licensing vans for knife crime. Its not about really catching people, its about creating the perception that you can be caught. The fact people here, who are probably more clued up then 15 year olds, are discussing it as a civil liberties issue, probably proves the point.

Whenever I hear anyone say they don't have a TV Licence there is always someone who immediately chips in about detector vans, despite the scientific implausibility (especially from the collective intelligence of Capita) and the fact they are rarer than hens teeth. I imagine the same effect if someone shows their mates they carry a knife is highly desirable to the police.
