Well, the title's a bit misleading, since this is going to be a trial - if it ever happens, unlike the one that got canned last year because the manufacturers wouldn't support it.
Personally I think the idea's somewhat pointless in this country, simply because so many of our motorway junctions are so close together. With the "platoons" separating and regrouping before & after each junction they'll spend hardly any time neatly slipstreaming each other - and that's assuming Aunt Mabel doesn't join the motorway in the middle of their little convoy and stay there in the nearside lane. It may well work OK in countries where motorways/freeways have junctions tens of miles apart. I also don't see the point of just trialling 3-truck platoons, since other drivers will just avoid such a short convoy and so it'll tell us nothing about behaviour if longer ones were allowed for real. Still, since this has been a politically-driven project from the start that probably means the politicians will get the answers they want, which is that it'll save masses of fuel, and the planet, and is safe as houses. -------------------- Regards,

It isnt political its a necessity, although the goverments have caused it through idiocy.
You would have to have a screw loose to become a truck driver and because of that they cannot get drivers and it will become much much worse over the next few years. They tried lowering the age of truck drivers to 18 but of course that hasn't worked, many 18 year olds cant even get car insurance never mind a truck licence. |

This isn't about self-driving trucks, though, more like a glorified form of adaptive cruise control for motorway use. There's still going to be a driver in each truck for the non-motorway parts of their journey.

So if ask, who is going to insure the changeable convoy, who is going to be the insured person? is the leading driver in charge of and responsible for, in the case of an accident, the whole convoy? Lot of pressure to be a driver under those circa if so.

Lot of pressure to be a driver under those circa if so. Wait till the nobs just come straight on at the slip roads feet in front of them and they WILL. With a single truck and trailer you have some chance of avoiding them but with a chain.....carnage.The only chance they have is running them through the night when many of the idiots are in bed. |
