Got this link from FB. the lorry driver got 1 year for killing a child on a pedestrian crossing. More interesting, the car driver who parked on the zog zags got fined £280.

I agree that it was Careless rather than Dangerous

That's the first report I've seen that makes clear that the child on the balance bike was following behind his mother and sister

I wouldn't expect him to be there and can understand why a truck driver who failed to look properly because his attention was elsewhere didn't see him

This is a tragic example of a number of small incidents - the parked car, the boy behind instead of in front, a large vehicle, a frustrated driver - coming together with catastrophic results

Careless driving and dangerous driving don’t mean what they mean in English though.

Careless is the standard of driving fell below (dangerous is far below) the standard expected of a competent and careful driver. I agree careless was the right offence even though it was clearly dangerous!
