Firstly, if this is not the right forum, please advise which one would be the correct one.
So yesterday, two new speed camera's went up at this GPS location 52.462210, 0.621020 Word on the street is the community speed enforcers no longer need to use the laser hand held but just point at the new camera's. I've acquired some photos of these new camera's and also been told how they work, but wanted to find out if this is a new legal method of calculating speed and what are the pitfulls with these devices? so the way they work is they are using the known size of the camera pixels in a high definition sensor in a standard camera lense to measure the known sizes of the number plates and letters over time as the vehicles goes towards or away from the camera. Two units are used for 1st and 2nd opinion ie going towards one and then away from the other. They work at night so some of us have been guessing if its some sort of infrared or multi light wavelength sensor being used. Anyway, is this possible and legal? Road sensors (those two rubber cables that span a road connected to a device) have also gone up in the sight of one of the camera's possibly to help correlate the speed to the images/footage captured. Anyway, any thoughts would be welcome so I can report back as a mate who works near by is wondering if he will get nicked for accelerating out of the corner down the straight quite likely faster than the 30mph it should be. I think someone is pulling your leg.
Without HOTA they can't be used. This post has been edited by Jlc: Tue, 9 Jan 2018 - 19:34 -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

Do they need HOTA even for a field technology trial? I'm not familiar with the process, but its not like any prosecutions will take place, just a letter advising people to slow down, but I thought it interesting that the bloke running the community speed enforcement has been told not to use the laser speed gun anymore, but to just point to the cameras up the lamppost as speeders go past.
Its an interesting new angle for calculating speed, but also opens up the possibility of being able prosecute speeders who upload videos to places like YouTube, as the same method can be used to workout how fast someone is/was going. In theory as vehicle dimensions are so precise due to the robotic workforce and laser welding et al, calculating the speed of a vehicle from any angle becomes easier, especially when considering how uniform street furniture is along with mass produced consumables. |

I think someone is pulling your leg. Without HOTA they can't be used. Wrong! There is nothing stopping the use of unapproved speed cameras in prosecutions. The evidence from unapproved systems just needs to be adduced in a different way to evidence from Approved devices. The systems in the image are Traffic counters not speed cameras. They can measure vehicle speed but are not usually used for enforcement. During the survey the traffic analyst will have asked for no enforcement activity during the survey period I woul say. Mystery over. You’re welcome. Do they need HOTA even for a field technology trial? Do you really think 2 boxes hung up haphazardly with no optics visible are precision vehicle motion detectors? Have a think |

They are traffic survey devices as is the the device with the two rubber pipes.

Wrong! Perhaps I should have qualified but if they were looking to utilise such a system for regular speed enforcement they would look to gain such approval. Any evidence (even my opinion) can obviously be submitted to court and the relevant weight given to it. -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver
