A couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of visiting London.
My ancient sat nav took me the wrong way, and it seems that, when finding my way back out, I entered a Low Emission Zone. I didn't notice any signs (nor did my passenger), but I dare say we must have passed some. My surprise arrived in the post a couple of days ago: a fine for £250. Normally I'd think 'oh well, what a cock-up; I should have seen the sign'. But this is £250 for taking a wrong turn. They also sent instructions to pay within 14 days, which expires in a few days' time. If I don't pay next week, it goes up to £500. If I still don't pay, it's £750. The reason for my fine? Because I was driving a Land Rover Defender. It's MOT'd as a class IV, but apparently it's a big, evil lorry and it shouldn't be near the great city. Any advice, other than to pay up quickly? |

I submitted a challenge, but the reply ignored most of my points, so it looks like I'll get nowhere.
Here's a pic of the reply. https://ibb.co/27Q5Df0 Annoyingly, they send letters stating replies must be made within 14 days of the date of service of the letter, but their letters are sent in pre-marked C9 envelopes, which are treated by our post workers as non-urgent. |

For anyone interested, the challenge received a lengthy reply, including specifics about Land Rover Defenders.
The result was I was allowed to pay £100 instead of the £250. |
