A couple of weeks ago, I made the mistake of visiting London.

My ancient sat nav took me the wrong way, and it seems that, when finding my way back out, I entered a Low Emission Zone. I didn't notice any signs (nor did my passenger), but I dare say we must have passed some.

My surprise arrived in the post a couple of days ago: a fine for £250. Normally I'd think 'oh well, what a cock-up; I should have seen the sign'. But this is £250 for taking a wrong turn. They also sent instructions to pay within 14 days, which expires in a few days' time. If I don't pay next week, it goes up to £500. If I still don't pay, it's £750.

The reason for my fine? Because I was driving a Land Rover Defender. It's MOT'd as a class IV, but apparently it's a big, evil lorry and it shouldn't be near the great city.

Any advice, other than to pay up quickly?

I submitted a challenge, but the reply ignored most of my points, so it looks like I'll get nowhere.

Here's a pic of the reply.

Annoyingly, they send letters stating replies must be made within 14 days of the date of service of the letter, but their letters are sent in pre-marked C9 envelopes, which are treated by our post workers as non-urgent.

For anyone interested, the challenge received a lengthy reply, including specifics about Land Rover Defenders.

The result was I was allowed to pay £100 instead of the £250.

+1, we've not seen anything on this specific scenario so it could be very useful.
