Hey,

I was caught speeding, which I'd usually fully admit to, but this time I'm very surprised I would do it at this particular place. I asked the police for information about the road markings, so I could see for myself I actually did it, but they won't give me any info before going to court (which I won't do, I'll just accept, unless I'm sure they have it wrong).

I move 4 lines from one picture to the next. If they mean 10mph each, then my memory clearly is very wrong. However, at 0.5s between pictures, there should be 17 meters between the first and second picture, which doesn't look right.

Any opinions?

The evidence of your speed is from the camera measurement - the lines on the road are only a secondary check.

They don't automatically mean 10mph per line - To work out your speed you need to know what the spacing between the lines is ?

At 40mph you cover 8.89m in 0.5 seconds, not 17m (which is probably why it doesn't look like 17m!).

Common line spacing is 2m or 5 feet, so circa 4.5 lines in 0.5 seconds on 2m spacing would confirm the speed.

In other words, math better. Thanks!

So, I remember wrong. Sadly, the difference between 30 and 39 is about 1mm of throttle. :-(

From this angle it doesn't look like two meters between them, but I'll go check that place. If it is 5 feet, the actual speed is 26mph, which is what I recall doing.

What's the location? Google Earth is pretty good at confirming the spacing...

How do you make it measure?

Ah, well, I found the tool. And between the big marks, there is exactly 10 meters, with 2m spacing in between. Case closed. At least I now know that I actually did it... :-(
