Hi all,

I'm fuming about this issue, below is a summary, any thoughts would be welcome!

1) I own a pharmacy, I asked my sister to drop off an elderly patients medicines on her way to visiting her friend

2) A very young policeman (early 20's) stopped my sister for driving without a seat belt (she deserved it)

3) Officer said he's giving her a severe caution for not wearing a seat belt, asked for her licence and insurance details etc

4) Officer then asked what she was doing, my sister answered honestly i.e dropping off medicines on her way to visiting friends

5) Officer now changed his mind, he became very rude, issued her a fine for not wearing a seatbelt (fair enough), issued points for not wearing a seatbelt (I guess also fair enough), ordered her car to be taken to a car pound (clearly he was just being an *** now), and said he's sending her to court driving without business insurance (again, being an ***)

P.S my sisters car is a bog standard ford fiesta, she's not a DPD driver!

Officer clearly had a vendetta against my sister who was in tears (much to the officers joy I assume). She argued with him about why he's towing her car, he never gave a valid answer, instead just told her to be quiet because she's under caution.

I don't even know where to begin

I didn't want to play the race card as I wanted to see what people's thoughts are first.......I have reason to suspect there was an element of that.

The officer initially told my sister he's giving her a warning only, but changed his mind right after he saw her name (thus ethnicity) and old picture on her driving license. This happened BEFORE he quizzed her about the medicines bag / business insurance issue.

My sister even confronted the officer and said something along the lines of 'you said you were going to give me a warning and now after you've seen my old picture you're changing your mind' officer replied something along the lines of 'yes i can change my mind' - which I guess he can do.

I also suspect the bigger element to this was his ego - the (very young) police man wanted to flex his muscles, so to speak - kept telling my sister to remain silent as she's under caution etc etc etc .

Anyway, my issue is why did the officer tow the car and make her pay close to £200 ? His actions are quite clear (in my mind anyway) - I cannot think of any reason other than him wanting to inflict maximum damage.

Will ask for copy of body cam footage for review.

By all means make a complaint, but in terms of the offences committed it doesn't really change anything. The outcome as described sounds disproportionate, since at the point she handed over the medicine to another person she was no longer uninsured and could have driven the car away legally.

Playing Devils Advocate but initially the cop was going to give her a warning for not wearing a seat belt, an offence that cops take a very dim view of as first responders. This then developed into no insurance, i.e. multiple offences, and at that point from his perspective he was maybe thinking that "this person in front of me has no respect for the law".
