On my way home tonight, spotted some new cameras on the M6 Northbound, just south of J27.

Look like the usual temporary yellow SPECS camera - stylized 'M' logo on the corner of the 90 bend and 3 cameras on the beam.

Odd thing is that they are painted grey and been fitted in a rather permenant looking way, rather than the usual block of concrete as a base.

Not near any roadworks, so was wondering if anyone had seen or know of this new style?

Hmmm. I noticed one like this recently, can't remember where, but it was down south.

SPECS cameras can be used for things other than speed enforcement, including journey time monitoring. Potentially they are being used for this? The fact they look like speed cameras, similar to the unused "dragons teeth" on other locations, could be a convenient add on.

That picture looks like a Vector camera, as it is described here:

(Apologies for using the Daily Mail as a source of information).

Vector and SPECS are the same cameras, produced by the (second) company to take over the original SPECS.

They are effectively setting themselves up for the likely future of "mesh" speed cameras, where you have them at each junction and they can monitor various routes. After all, why buy a speed camera when you can buy a speed camera AND red light camera AND one that monitors moving offences AND one that checks PNC databases AND one that does all your journey time mapping for you AND is all linked together in one piece of software.

There are a few of these "Grey Specs" hidden behind a few gantries on the M62 (M1 to Bradford), I think they are just ANPR. They've been there a while and are on the same pole as the yellow speed cameras, just grey.
