The pay and display parking machines that take coins have been bagged off in our street for one time. My wife saw a worker removing the bags the other day and asked what's going on - he said the coin machines are being reinstated because the council is losing revenue as people don't park as much using pay by phone.

He said pay by phone is doing well at the far south of the borough in the City (this is Hackney) but not so much elsewhere.

So there you have it, cash is still (par)king, to coin a phrase.

Pay by parking is great. I hated it at first, but I never have coins- when I get home they go in a bucket and I take it to the coin machine at Asda the day before I go on my main holiday each year for some extra drink funds.
You've lost out on any interest earned on that cash, you've had the capital tied up for that amount of time and then you also lose out on the coin machine %age too.

Completely tongue in cheek !!

Let’s all go back then – it was so much easier in the old days.

Parking – no choice, cash or nothing, return to car if you wish to extend your time.

Driving Licence renewal – back to queuing every three years in some council office with dozens of others waiting to have another little sticker inserted into your red driving licence book.

Buying a car – documentation has to be sent off and, with luck, you might get your new car 2-3 weeks after purchase.

Changing a personalised number – arrange with your dealer to have both cars attend at some dingy council car park (with a dozen other dealers/owners) 20 miles away in order that some minion can walk out and check the vehicle details. Then wait a few weeks for the paperwork to come through.

Car insurance – lengthy application forms to be filled out and sent off and possibly returned if changes are required before insurance agreed.

Apply and wait for an insurance continental green card weeks before travel.

Queue in your bank (other banks/branches don’t know you) to cash a cheque for cash in your wallet.

Pay for goods – pay by cheque then return a week later to collect your goods when the cheque has cleared.

The bliss of travelling in irregular, filthy stinking trains with little faith that any connecting trains will be there.

Taking two days to drive from Glasgow to Dover.

Let me get this straight. You're saying this was in the old days?
