Hi all, quick question . There is a dual carriage way near me heading from the M1 junction 41 towards wakefield city centre. I was coming from my check up at the hospital in wakefield down the dual carriageway which is the national speed limit apart from the tiny last stretch for 500m which is 40mph. I was slowing down (admittedly not as fast as I should) where i noticed a police bike in the lay bay holding the police speed gun. Now he didnt flag me to pull into the lay bay , instead while still looking into the camera at on coming cars he held his hand up with only 4 fingers up, guessing tell me and the other driver speeding it was 40mph. I have lived in the same place for 18 years and have only heard of a speed gun being there once (no signs saying camera or 'speed check zone') , and everyone I MEAN everyone speeds there( I know it doesn't make it right, the law is the law and all that) on that tiny stretch as it makes no sense it being 40mph there, so i'm sure the police have fund raised ££££ yesterday. Just one question, do the new hand held speed cameras look a lot like the anpr cameras you see sometimes on the roof at the back of police cars as i'm sure it didn't look like how i thought speed cameras looked, wondering if its an ANPR camera looking at tax or insurance, and secondly would he of not pulled me then into the lay bay for speeding, it is a pretty safe place to do so, road conditions where good no car in front of me etc ? Hope you all have a good day and thanks for answering my questions. I know its most likely a case of wait and see!

I assume you mean J45 and Pontefract Lane? Appears to a 50 MPH limit until the first roundabout and then 40 MPH after that.

He would most likely pulled you if you were above his threshold but the 4 fingers probably indicates it was just a warning. You will have to wait 14 days (assuming you are the registered keeper and the address on the V5C is correct) to be sure. BTW the police get nothing from speeding fixed penalties or court fines.

No Junction 41 to wakefield if you know it? A650. Was slowing down anyway around the slight bend was probably at 50mph by the time he seen me. I usually slow down between 40 - 50 on that road.

QUOTE BTW the police get nothing from speeding fixed penalties or court fines. Indeed, but they do earn around £40 for every candidate they send on a Speed Awareness Course. The fee for these is £100, so they get 40% of that amount. A nice little earner. No other offence in the whole lexicon of crime results in the police getting money from enforcement. Can this be why so many police forces spend a lot of time on this, and little on things like burglary etc. |

It is wait and see.
Nominal cut off before they will prosecute is 10%+2mph so in a 40 limit, 46mph. Plus the local cops may have their own higher threshold. Add to that any inaccuracies in your speedo, which will be showing a higher speed then actual, your maybe 50mph may well be below the threshold. No point losing sleep on it, you will either get a ticket or not, cannot change that. It will be worth slowing on that section though, now you know they may be waiting. |

Neither NDORS or UKROEd Ltd give money to Police Forces, Local Councils or Third Party organisations for the courses to be run. The money that NDORS passes to the Road Safety Trust is used by them to support bids for funding for road safety and related projects. Some course fees are now approaching £200. Course fees Isn't it the case that traffic cops look after traffic and CID look after burglaries? |

Which of course says nothing about where the difference between the course fee and the amounts received by NDORS/the course provider goes. Meanwhile... Isn't it the case that traffic cops look after traffic and CID look after burglaries? You've been watching too many old episodes of Dixon of Dock Green. -------------------- Regards,

Some course fees are now approaching £200. Course fees Scotland is on that list? -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver
PoFA=Protection of Freedoms Act, SAC=Safety Awareness Course, NIP=Notice of Intended Prosecution, ADR=Alternative Dispute Resolution PPC=Private Parking Company, LBCCC=Letter Before County Court Claim, PII=Personally Identifiable Information, SAR=Subject Access Request Private Parking - remember, they just want your money and will say almost anything to get it. |

It's the "Safe and Considerate Driving" course list, for drivers who've been involved in collisions - one of a handful of non-speeding related courses. -------------------- Regards,

I thought there was a whole array of non-speeding courses. The best ones must be the online seatbelt courses, last time I looked they were charged at £36 a pop at a marginal cost of, well, nothing really. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

I had to look at the seat belt course.
Particularly like "At the end they are given a personalised plan to help them to get into the habit of always wearing a seat belt." Uhm.... John MacTavish, put ya 'effin belt on or we'll have you for real? |

It would have to be a one-dimensional array, because there are 5 in my handful. Still, that means there's more non-speed courses than speed courses. Personally I'm in favour of these courses, the more police funding comes from them, the less the police precept of council tax needs to increase. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php
