Does anyone know if this is a red light camera or a sensor as I accidentally went through it on red because I didn't want to slam my brakes on as it changed?

No, GSV here.

It's a traffic sensor connected to the request button.

For future reference amber means stop, it's illuminated for 3 seconds (+/- 0.25s) and you should stop unless you are too close to the stop line. There is no (normal) defence for passing at red.

RLC's are at the side of the road and have buried sensors to detect vehicles passing the stop line.

No idea, the sensor is facing the wrong direction to be of any use as a camera (which it is not). A camera would need to be set back and pointed in the direction the traffic was moving.
