brought up on another forum where a guy has had the council invoice!

The discussion got around to if it was an offence to enter if your exit is not clear or stopping

I suggested that it was the stopping as you can enter and crawl through the box, but the turn right rule allows you to stop without penalty

Then someone said,
What about turning left ( you are in the box) and having to stop ( whether you or the car in front turning left) because of pedestrians crossing the road Would the council be that nasty and send a letter?
Has it been known ( a case no would be helpful)

It’s a PCN, not an invoice!

Your answer is in the Highway Code, no it wouldn’t be an offence.

Box junctions
11.—(1) Subject to sub-paragraphs (2), (3) and (4), the yellow criss-cross marking provided for at item 25 of the sign table in Part 6 conveys the prohibition that a person must not cause a vehicle to enter the box junction so that the vehicle has to stop within the box junction due to the presence of stationary vehicles.

Three parts.
Must not cause the vehicle to enter.
So if the lorry behind doesn't stop and pushes the car into the YBJ, there is no contravention of the box.

So the vehicle has to stop....
but is conditional although councils seem to forget that. Stop and have a picnic does not break the YBJ rules.

Due to the presence of stationary vehicles
Pedestrians crossing on a left turn are not stationary vehicles.
If there are two cars turning left and the first is stopped by pedestrians, no worries.
But the second car, if they have blindly followed the first into the box and also has to stop.... due to the presence of stationary vehicles.

If the other forum is that ill informed on the law, I really hope no one is following legal advice from there.
