After a protracted trial including SEVEN hours of evidence from a camera operator Celtic player Leigh Griffiths was found guilty and fined £200( wonder how he'll manage to pay that) and got three points to add to the ones he already has. He has another Court appearance soon for a further speeding offence and was told he must appear.
Are Scottish JP's restricted in what fines/ points they can hand out compared to Sheriffs. Wonder what the Court costs work out at?. I wonder if Griffiths thinks his solicitor is worth the money given the arguments he put forward. https://www.dailyrecord.co.uk/news/scottish...-found-13280423 |

Because that's the home of summary trials ?
(in case my earlier reply isn't clear i meant Sheriffs have the larger powers) |

(in case my earlier reply isn't clear i meant Sheriffs have the larger powers) The article I read says a JP Court can impose a fine of £1000 or £2500 on a motorway ( which this wasn't) so dunno why he only fined him £200 not that paying a lot more would be a struggle. |

No costs in Scotland so don't get confused with English and Welsh paper headlines which also include surcharges. This post has been edited by henrik777: Thu, 20 Sep 2018 - 20:32 |

It’s a petty offence so all courts should be able to deal with it. -------------------- Moderator

dunno why he only fined him £200 not that paying a lot more would be a struggle. What should be the fine for 62 in a 50? Income based fines are not used in Scotland (in the same way as E&W) and no costs, you could argue that this creates such an 'abuse' such as this where the cost of ensuring justice has been artificially inflated 'just because he can', but realistically that would be open to anyone who wanted to do so. All that was at stake here with a not guilty plea was the (small in monetary terms) discount off the fine, it was a three points and small fine offence anyway. -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

I knew about the no costs but didnt realise the fines amount wasnt income based- perhaps it should be. When Griffiths was being interviewed after last nights game where he scored the winning ( and only) goal the interviewer mentioned about him getting Celtic 3 Points. She possibly considered mentioning the other 3 points he got but that would have been a bit naughty but would have been good to see his reaction.
