Turning into road across a lane when in traffic, Not sure if there's a term for this

So I was in rush hour traffic but wanted to turn left into the road in the image attached (the white boxes with the crosses and the blue crosses indicate roughly where cars were in traffic and arrow is direction of travel into the road). Both lanes go in the same direction and traffic had stopped so I thought I'd go in the right lane, get to the road (which has a box junction in front of it) and indicate left to go in.

As I tried to do this a van pretty much sped and tailgated me putting me under pressure and someone was crossing the road I was turning into so I had to wait a few seconds (I felt bad as I felt that I startled them as they were crossing and probably weren't expecting me to turn in, although I gave them ample time to cross). This caused the car approaching the box junction maybe having to wait a bit longer (as the cars beyond the box junction had started moving by now).

Question I have - is is this OK/acceptable in traffic? I've noticed people do this every so often but that doesn't make it OK. What are everyone's thoughts please? Also - is there a name for it?

PS: I've used this forum every so often, so great to see it alive and well after so many years! :-)

Providing you use care and caution there shouldn't be any problem, after all it is quite legal to drive on the right side of the road in a one-way street which this is, and nothing to prevent you turning into the side road if the way is clear.

It's still a dodgy manoeuvre like going around a roundabout on the inside lane then cutting across the outside lane to exit you are risking the car on your left ramming into the side of your vehicle as you turn.

Yes, but the traffic in the left lane on that road is usually stationary waiting for the level crossing gates round the corner to open. On a roundbout traffic "ought " to be moving.
