Hi there,

Any help on the below would be appreciated

My house has recently been undergoing renovations and I live with two house mates who have not notified me until today that I had some post waiting for me. To my horror I have 5 NIP’s from a 12 day period between 17/2 and 28/2 . On the same stretch of road I commute on every day and have for the past 3 years. They are 3 from one camera and 2 from another basically going to and from work

All are 36/40 MPH

2 are saying due to temporary restriction to 30mph on a motorway (road works ) and 3 exceed 30mph against a local traffic order

I have never had any speeding offence etc prior to this and apparently until recently this road has always been 40mph

So basically 15 points and a driving ban within the same 12 day period. I haven’t done anything at all yet apart from send various panicked emails to the solicitors listed here:,

I can’t do my job if I can’t drive either which is worrying

Any advice would be appreciated

Thank you

Quick question

If the first offence is 17/2 but letter dates 18/2 is the deadline 18/2?

Draft letter here

To whom it may concern

Please find enclosed 5 NIP’s, please may I add the below comments

Firstly I have held a full clean driving license for over 8 years with no penalty points

Secondly I have driven this same road on the way to and from work for the last 3 years with no issue.

Thirdly given the time between the offences I have had no time to modify my driving behaviour and my house is currently undergoing renovations and so until the 6/3 I had no idea I had any post which means again no time to modify behaviour

You can see the offences are the same camera on the way to and from the office and I have obviously missed the restrictions as each speed is under 40 which is what I believed to be the speed of the road and the one I have been using for years

Two of the offences are on the same day to and from the office so the same round trip

Could I ask is there any way these could be looked at again regarding the circumstances above as I feel 15 penalty points given my driving history and the circumstances around this seem extreme

Thank you

The date of the letter is the relevant one for the S172 deadline.

I have edited your letter below. It is up to you but IMO best to keep it simple & fall on your sword. You don't want them to think you are appealing/excusing the offences.

Please find enclosed 5 NIP’s. Please could I make you aware of why I am returning them together.

I was shocked and disappointed to receive one letter, let alone five. Unfortunately I didn't receive the first letter until after the fifth offence was committed. Because of this I did not realise I had missed the restrictions. I genuinely thought the road had a 40mph limit.

I have held a full clean driving license for over 8 years with no penalty points. I am well aware of the dangers of excessive speed and would have immediately limited my speed had I realised I was speeding.

Please would it be possible to consider the offences together when deciding what further action will be taken. I would greatly appreciate if any discretion could be shown given the exceptional circumstances.

Thank you

With any luck they will offer one course and one FPN. At that stage you can pursue a defence, without risking your licence.

Before you snatch defeat from the jaws of victory - WHERE ARE THOSE IMAGES of the signs???

It may also be important when they were placed there (and when the actual restriction was in place)?

Depends how they word the 'offer', if he makes them take him to court they may just go with all 5.

If they make a decent offer I'd suggest accepting would be the better tactic.

Can we at least spell “licence” correctly? In this context it is a noun not a verb.
