I run A red light. I was going 30. lights changed i revved up to 40 to beat but changed to red! Did not get stopped by police. But i read dash cam footage cannot be used in court because it costs to much. But Im worried about the big cctv camera directly on the road. Can big cctv camera be used?

I presume you mean it changed to amber when you approached - you should not accelerate. Either you can stop (amber means stop) or if you are so close to the stop line that you cannot stop safely before red then you should continue.
There is no usual defence for passing at red. I presume it's your own dash cam footage - not sure why you'd want to incriminate yourself... Anyway, CCTV is not used for redlight offences. It is highly unlikely you'll hear anything unless there was a RLC. -------------------- RK=Registered Keeper, OP=Original Poster (You!), CoFP=Conditional Offer of Fixed Penalty, NtK=Notice to Keeper, NtD=Notice to Driver

But i read dash cam footage cannot be used in court because it costs to much. Dash cam footage doesn't cost anything, people normally provided to the police for free. If someone has reported you, then if the lights had only just turned, you might be offered a driver improvement course. If not, 3 points and £100 fixed penalty. Have you received any paperwork or are you just worried someone might report you? -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

Normally the driver behind will be the witness, their dashcam footage just corroborates their version of events.

The old adage if you've got time to put your foot on the gas, you've got time to put your foot on the brake.

In the time it was taking you to come here and write that post with all the stress, that is probably a lot more of the time in your life than it would have been to wait for the next green phase. Well probably - some traffic lights do seem to take forever to change. And some change far too quickly.
Still, if you put the brakes on and stop at amber there is a big chance you'll get rear-ended by the one behind you also hoping to jump that light. I have made multiple complaints to traffic authorities about traffic lights that don't change soon enough, plus a few that change far too quickly. I have considered getting a helmet-cam just for the purpose of timing the phasing of the traffic lights. And I believe that badly phased lights lead to bad driving around them. |

But could affect insurance premiums. And I believe that badly phased lights lead to bad driving around them. Absolutely, I believe traffic light sequences are phased to cause maximum traffic disruption, that way they can say the air is polluted and then charge you more for driving to reduce the pollution they caused in the first place. |

A lot of the time it's even pedestrian lights that take so long to change that pedestrians get fed up and cross anyway. I have timed a few to be over a minute waiting for the light to change.
Then the light finally changes when there are no pedestrians waiting because they all crossed. As a blanket rule I would say no traffic light should ever stay on a green phase longer than 40 seconds, and probably no shorter than 12 and ideally 15 seconds. |

I don't think CCTV's are allowed to capture red light runners. Unless a traffic cop seen you.

I don't think CCTV's are allowed to capture red light runners. Unless a traffic cop seen you. I’m not sure whether your claiming CCTV can’t be used or a traffic officer has to ‘seen you’. Are you saying anyone else witnessing the crime can’t be a witness and secure a prosecution? -------------------- There is no such thing as a law abiding motorist, just those who have been scammed and those yet to be scammed!

I don't think CCTV's are allowed to capture red light runners. Unless a traffic cop seen you. If I were to film you going through a red light on my mobile phone that would be sufficient to secure a prosecution, I don't know why you think CCTV cameras are any different. The only real issue is CCTV cameras are unlikely to capture the vehicle registration. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php

The only real issue is CCTV cameras are unlikely to capture the vehicle registration. A lot of CCTV by the roadside are specifically there to catch registrations, yellow box cameras for instance. AFAIK, these are not used by police to catch red light jumpers but cannot see a reason why they could not be. I would certainly expect footage to be examined in cases of severe accident and evidence used if needed. |

I don't think CCTV's are allowed to capture red light runners. Unless a traffic cop seen you. They wouldn't routinely be used, that's what red light cameras are for. However, it isn't beyond the realms of possibility that the operators report the incident to the police. Whether they'd bother is anyone's guess. |

Whether they'd bother is anyone's guess. There would have to be a council policy on this. I can't see a council CCTV operator taking it upon himself to report matters to the police. I've never heard of a council putting such a policy in place, not least because they would gain no revenue from red light cases. -------------------- If you would like assistance with a penalty charge notice, please post a thread on https://www.ftla.uk/index.php
