AFAIK a secondary check is a condition of type approval for GATSO cameras (and others which work without an operator present). With no road markings, there is no secondary check, so it would be operating outside its type approval. I would if possible go there and take some photos and reply asking for "any available photographs to assist in identifying the driver" with no mention of proof or evidence. If these come back showing they were from a fixed GATSO with no markings you will have some useful ammunition to get this dropped. Just to clarify, no speeding ticket/NIP has been sent through, and I was travelling Westbound, I just wondered about the legality of a camera with no road markings. Thanks for the info though, very useful. |

Thanks very much for the replies everyone. Border_Collie: It was a "minute of madness", and was only speeding past that particular GATSO camera covering the Eastbound traffic, and there were 100% no mobile cameras on that stretch. I noticed that that road has been recently relaid, but no markings have been painted on yet? Does that mean the GATSO wouldn't be able to function properly on the Eastbound side? Again, thank you everyone for your help. |

GATSO's are only type approved for taking photo's as you pass them (i.e. rear of the vehicle). Truvelo's only take forward facing pictures and you would have noticed. I would assume you're safe - but getting caught doing 80 in a 40 would stop you driving for a while... That's as I thought with regarding the GATSO's. I'm 99% sure it is a GATSO there. I had a check on Google Maps which showed it as being a GATSO. If it was a Truvelo, would it be able to cover the two lanes I was travelling in, bearing in mind that there would be at least another 2 lanes travelling in the opposite direction and an "island" between myself and the camera? |

Hopefully someone can offer some advice regarding the above road. I was travelling in to London on the A20 with a friend of mine. We were travelling West, so in to central London, along a stretch of road which is a 40 limit. It is a dual carriageway, so 2 lanes going West in to London, 2 lanes going East out of London. We were going around 80 (ish) at the time, and noticed that on the opposite side of the road (on the pavement furthest from us), there was a speed camera. Neither of us noticed if it was a GATSO or Truvelo, but it was definiteley one or the other. There were no road markings on either our side of the road, or the side on which the camera was located. Seperating our side of the dual carriageway to the other side was an "island". The camera was NOT on the island in the middle, it was on the pavement on the far side. My question is, can GATSO/Truvelo cameras cover 4 lanes of traffic moving in two different directions? So bearing in mind that we were on the opposite side of the road, with an island in the middle, and no markings on the road, what are the chances of the camera being able to capture our speed etc? Thanks in advance. |
