FightBack Forums _ The Flame Pit _ NIP M25 Variable speed limit

Ok, so I'm going to pay the fine and just live with this but I just want to have a bit of a rant first. Life is soooo unfair and all that.
Last week I got a NIP in the post for speeding at 48 in a 40 area of the M25, the variable speed limit area just before the dartford crossing going north. I picked up a ticket at the exact same place last year doing pretty much the exact same speed. Both times I was completely unaware I had been flashed and was convinced I was doing the correct speed. My sat nav beeps when I come up to a camera and I drive this hellish road enough to know it's there even if I was inclined to speed. It's fairly obvious that I thought I was doing the correct speed but some how missed the change at the earlier gantry. Anyone who drives this stretch of the m25 knows that the speeds are changing practically every half mile. There's me thinking the limit is 50 but at some point it's changed to 40 and I missed it.
Today I drove the same stretch at the same time as I received the NIP, same weather conditions and finally figured out whats going on. Had my sun visor down low due to the sun in my eyes. Where you are coming up to the camera where I received the NIP you are going downhill, therefore the gantry that displays the new limit is completely concealed (by the visor). Therefore I'm completely missing the change of speed and the camera is attached to this gantry.
I'm sure this excuse wouldn't stand up in court but damnit this seems unfair. Guess I'll just drive with my visor up from now on and risk being blinded!!

We all live and learn.

Quite honestly I'm surprised you managed to get up to anything like that speed when approaching the Dartford Crossing heading north. The traffic is usually backed up to the Swanley interchange. Some drivers I know would willingly pay a hundred quid to be able to get up to 48. biggrin.gif

Yeah, I would expect the answer "to the visor obscured the sign" to be a diplomatic version of "your own fault."
From your description of relying on the satnav beep to let you know there is a camera gantry, are you one who brakes when it beeps ?

+1, I often find it an achievement to reach 30 on that stretch of road.

It was early in the day but just after rush hour, those rare few hours when it isn't nose to tail. There was me feeling all smug that I got through the tunnel in good time mad.gif

Don't think I said anything about relying on the satnav, don't be too quick to jump to conclusions.

Ooh, feisty. This could be quick.

The only real way to deal with variable speed cameras is to be vigilant, and to slow down before you reach the sign (especially if you don't know where the cameras are located).

Given that we're in the Flame Pit now...

I feel the confusion may have come with the way your statement was written.

It is not a leap to infer from the above that the Sat Nav is a part of your driving equipment, and that you know when cameras are as a result of it.

Therefore to ask (in what I felt was a tongue in cheek manner, but I could be wrong) the question about braking as a result of Sat Nav utilisation is not necessarily a jump to a conclusion.

Obviously that's just my opinion; but that may explain the confusion.
