Presumably none of the 27 EU leaders who decided that banning tungsten filament lamps was a good idea, asked anyone who knew anything about the subject before doing so.
BTW, I've never managed to get anywhere near the claimed (by the manufacturers) 5 X wattage savings. My (crude) measurements put it somewhere between 3 X and 4 X, which ties in with a letter in the IEE News early last year. The Western lighting companies must be delirious with this. They can't do anything about low cost economy countries making cheap TFLs, but guess what? Who owns the patents for CFLs? This post has been edited by jeffreyarcher: Wed, 14 Mar 2007 - 01:24 |

i can see that if you are also using electricty to run air conditioning then the heat
from lamps ismdoubly wasting of power but in anorthere countries where half the year you have to heat your house/office/factory the heat is not wasted banning them in such a short period is ludicrous and wasteful in any case |

The claimed "lifetime" of the CFL bulbs doesn't go anywhere near the claims made by the manufacturers. I know lots offer warranties but not many claim on that...
And when you do, with the same 1 bulb OSRAM eventually refuse to change it stating it was getting "misused" Never mind, In went a TFL In the new house they fitted Non-Integrated CFL's (ballast seperate to the lamp) and so far we've had 3 ballasts go "Crack" emit a huge spark and die... Strangely enough in the bathroom's and utility room... We've put it down to the multiple turn on/ turn off's which CFL don't like - needless to say they've been swapped for TFL's It's sooo simple to ban CFL's... What will cause problems is that security lighting won't work with CFL's or numerous other applications. -------------------- Regards, Insider
