First it was retail parks, then came station car parks. Now drivers who fill their car up at garages, or use the car wash are being hit with £100 demands from private parking companies for staying too long

They have to find some genuine people to pursue, there's no money in it otherwise...

The story is of course in the victims who are using the facilities on site and then get penalised, but my guess is BP and Shell are trying to stop people parking cars on their busy sites and then going somewhere else close by (a cinema perhaps or even a railway station). At our premises on the busy A19 we have a problem of people meeting in our private car park, leaving (say) 3 cars and all going up to Newcastle in one car.

No problems preventing ‘abuse’ but pursuing genuine customers is much more fun.

I know one of the people quoted, which is probably why it ended up as a news item. Nothing new here as the private parking section here has been covering petrol stations for ages, but I'm struck by how it seems to be a new outrage - a reform of the system for private sites is long overdue.

Anyone remember the days when petrol stations only sold petrol (and maybe a few other car-related items)?

Now you have the ridiculous situation when people fill their cars up and leave them at the pump while they spend half an hour in the attached Spar*.

*Other convenience shop chains attached to petrol stations are available.

Yes but petrol stations generally have separate parking spaces for those doing a weekly shop.

They may have but some dinna bother using them.
Our local Tesco Express/Esso station has 2 pumps for card only, often see someone has filled then gone into the shop....

Mind you, it's the ones who have to queue to use the pump for the right side of their car... and block access to the further pumps that are empty but wrong side for them... who irritate me.
FFS, the hoses will reach both sides !!!!

Difficult to see how they're going to cope when they install chargers for electric cars. These need a lot longer than a few minutes to charge-up.

Might be a sea-change in how we think about this. Maybe we will charge our cars while we shop in superstores or more likely at work or home. On that basis petrol stations will be redundant.

Our Tesco express here says they will reach both sides which is true but you need to park in exactly the right position which is very tight.
So not always possible.

Not to mention some nice scratches on the bodywork by draping the hose over the boot or roof !

If they will reach the far side of my Sedona, I'm damn sure that they will reach the far side of a Twingo !

But oh for the good old days of an XJ6 I owned.
Twin fillers, one on each side of the boot.
Pull up in centre and get both pumps working.
Even better, I could afford it back then.
