Been a while since I've been here. biggrin.gif

Looking for some advice on the new speed cameras on the M6 Smart Motorway between Stoke and Knutsford. These are the twin pair at the side of the road. I was driving northbound last night. The motorway was busy but traffic was flowing well and there were no speed restrictions in force. I was in Lane 4 having passed a line of vehicles in lane 3. As I was passing a set of cameras a car undertook me in lane 3 and there was a double flash for what seemed to be both cameras. I was travelling at more than the NSL but clearly the car in lane was doing more than me.

Anyone any idea how these work and determine what vehicle actually triggered them? What's more worrying for me is the fact they seem to be active even when there is no temp limit in place.

If you mean the pair of cameras set just before a gantry, these are just to capture the state of the gantry displayed speed limits. The flash would have come from the HADECS3 unit mounted on the side of the gantry.

Yes, some are configured to enforce NSL. They will trigger at 79mph.

Radar based and determine the lane in which the vehicle is speeding.

It was pitch black so it would have come from cameras at the side of the sign. On this section of the M6 it isn't gantrys like on the M42 but large matrix signes at the side.

Wasn't aware they were set to enforce NSL. We were both doing excess of 79mph. I had 90mph on my adaptive cruise so the car on the inside was certainly doing more than that. I normally sit at an indicated 80mph but having been held up significantly coming around Birmingham on the M5 and then endured what must be 25 miles of roadworks and average speed cameras where they are converting the M6 to Smart Motorway, I put the foot down a bit.

I wonder if they can detect both cars at the same time?

You may well get a NIP then... 14 day wait if you are the registered keeper.

If you had CC set to 90 there may well be more than 1 NIP on its way, there are multiple cameras up that stretch.

It is now over 2 weeks since I saw the flash but no NIP has been received. Looks like I've dodged a bullet.
